I really love this name & would without doubt pick it for my dc BUT im petrified about the raised eyebrows that may occur when we announce the name as when I've mentioned it in passing in the past a few people have thought it was bizarre... Please tell me what would YOU think if a member of your family announced the name Cooper for their new baby?

I like it - I suggested it on another thread where someone was considering a surname-type name that I didn't like as much.

I know small boys called Harrison, Jackson and Carter, cooper is easily as nice as those.

As far as connections, there was a Dr in Private Practice (Greys Anatomy spin off) called Cooper, but he was lovely!

I don't know any Coopers in real life but of course I wouldn't give negative feedback if anyone said that is what they had named their child. Or wouldn't even say I didn't like it if they said they were considering it. Unless it was a very close family member then I might. But on MN at least you get what people really think not like real life!

The Cooper I know of has never had any negative feedback (they would have said). You will always get a name that people both like and dislike (although my DS's name is definitely way more disliked than liked on here but we still love it)

Thanks for sell the feedback guys! Incidentally does anybody have a Cooper of their own on here - would love to hear about the comments you get in RL?

My first thought was Tommy Cooper but clearly that won't be an issue in the playground in 2019. I actually like it. Sounds like a confident sort of name ( if that makes sense)

Don't like it, don't particularly like surnames as first names anyway but just don't like the sound of it.

I'm not keen on surnames as first names, and I also think it can be confusing.

My DH's surname can also be a first name, which often causes confusion if his name has to be put in alphabetical order in a list as people sometimes inverse them

If someone in my family said they had called their child Cooper, I'd wonder if they couldn't have been a little more imaginative that calling the baby Cooper Cooper.

I've changed my mind, you should definitely use it if you love it. Feck what anyone thinks. It's 1000 times better than Wilfred which is almost universally adored on MN for some bizarre reason.

I can't understand contemplating choosing a name for your child that makes you petrified of the raised eyebrows it will cause?
Your child has to go through his whole life introducing himself as whatever name you give him. Don't give him Cooper.

I usually really like surnamey names, but cooper doesn't sit right for me.
No real reason, I just don't like it.

It's not my favourite, but it's ok, inoffensive, easy enough to spell and pronounce, I would probably get used to it.

I would think it was very American. However you may well be American so who knows! Not massively keen on it though
