sorry, about my fourth thread on here as we have been going round in circles. previous contenders for ds2 (sams brother) have been robert and nathaniel. matthew has come out of the woodwork suddenly as a name we could grow to love, we think, feeling perhaps similarly to how we felt about samuel.

I have a Matthew and love the name but was a little unsure when we chose it (thirteen years ago) as there were a couple of dodgy television presenters around called Matthew at the time. Fortunately they both seem to have pretty much disappeared now.

I have a Matthew. It's a lovely classic name that will never raise any eyebrows but unusual enough in children at the moment that he's unlikely to be one of three in the class.
DS is never "Matty" though I expect he will be "Matt" eventually, which is fine.

Ha, DH is actually called Matthew Samuel, always loved the name Matthew, even before I met him.

I love Matthew. I would use it myself but I had an old school friend called Matthew whose surname is also my married name, so it would feel a little weird to give my son an identical name!

I have a Matthew. My DH suggested it because he said every Matthew or Matt he had met was a great guy. I love it and glad we went for it. Robert and Stephen were other serious contenders. Classic names that aren't massively overused at the moment.

Ok, I am clearly in the minority, but to go against the grain I think Matthew and Matt are very boring names. I don't know why, it is certainly not a horrible name, just to me seems a little dull, like John, or Robert or James.

Like everyone has said, it will go with Sam. Go for it if you love it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Matthew is a great name. I've never met a Matt who wasn't a lovely guy.

I think it's lovely. Do you mind Matt /Matty? He'l probably get called these.
Id love to use it but it's my Exs name so it's off the cards here :(

My son is called Matthew and now that he's older he's known as Matt by his friends ... suits him and is a good strong traditional name

My Matthew is now taller than me and is Matthew at home but Matt at school. I like Matt but when he was a baby it seemed to old for him - it was a bigger boy running around playing football or rugby not my baby!

His friends at school are Sam and Dan.

So it's a yes from me!

thanks everyone thats nice feedback.

mrswellyboot james has always been one if my favourites, if not the favourite but my husbands never loved it enough.

hes even liking matthew alexander, which is promising! (i dont know why but i just love alexander as a mn, but not as a first name).

We've got a Matthew, so obviously love it. He's Matty as a baby (sorry, I know you said you couldn't abide it but I think it's quite cute), then assume will be Matt when older which I think is quite cool too. Goes well with Sam (your in laws will call him Matty though!)

I really like Matthew and it goes well with Sam. I also think Daniel (Dan) would go nicely too and has a similar feel. I like Robert and Nathaniel, but Matthew or Daniel go better and feel similar.

....or Joseph (Joe) too.

And calm down about nicknames...they are totally organic and will happen whether you like them or not. I almost didn't choose my daughter's name because of the possible nickname but invariably, all that love her end up calling her by it (even me) and it has grown on me. Think of it as a term of endearment .

i have to say, in general i dont love most names shortened, other than samuel, who was always going tobe sam (and bloody sammy to the inlaws who just refuse to take on board that we hate it!) but i know we dont have control over that and matt it will probably end up, which im ok with (but matty i cannot abide i hope you are listening mil).

there are very few names we both like to be honest. so anything we agree on is going to be fairly neutral!
