oldbutnotpastit · 14/01/2014 15:04

we are expecting a surprise dc in the summer . we have a large extended family so many names we like are no longer available . we also have older dcs who each have 2 middle names .I don't want to out myself by naming them .

we both like Winifred but i'm really not sure it goes with Arabella .
i like Priscilla but think it might be too similar to dd's name.

for girls we seem to have a thing about witch names as Tabitha , Samantha , Theodora and Sabrina have all been mentioned along with Winifred .

Hester and Esther our lovely but it rhymes with the first syllable of our surname .
for boys Raphael is nice but Gabriel and Raphael but worry may be a bit twee
after watching chitty chitty bang bang DH has also mentioned Caratacus and i think he's serious.

any ideas both male and female gratefully received

oldbutnotpastit · 27/01/2014 14:45

Ps I think you can also spell it Esmund. It is a family name of my DH - I think they spell it with an O.

celestialsquirrelnuts · 27/01/2014 14:33

Ooh hurrah!

You have to give a solemn vow to update us on the final choice or I'll fret about it Grin

oldbutnotpastit · 27/01/2014 13:45

just looked up the meaning of esmond protected by god's grace and that is lovely . dh likes edmund but i don't like the nn ed/eddie so esmond could work

celestialsquirrelnuts · 27/01/2014 13:22

Atalanta?

I have 4 kids with 12 names between them and most if their nAmes appear on this thread!

Names we considered and rejected in no particular order:
Valentine
Valentina
Aurora
Aubrey
Godfrey
Dudley (these last three my DH suggestions and vetoed by me!)
Gilbert
Esmond (more unusual than Edmond? I like it anyway)
Bertrand
Guy
Piers
Justin (not used enough IMO)
Athena/Athene
Mariana (ooh yes use this! Good with Arabella!)

Can't think of any others at the moment. If you pm me I'll send you the full Monty of my kids names and you can see if there is anything you like there!

oldbutnotpastit · 27/01/2014 11:17

really like Emmeline , Virginia , Hector and Gilbert will run them past dh but i expect he'll not embrace them .

only surname we could maybe consider is Clifton (cliff) but it feles ver ol d fashioned.

i like biblical and saints names particularly and also greek , roman style although dh is less impressed by these

If you like the like go for it! Smile

I love Jasper, sadly sounds rubbish with my surname.

poppydaisy · 26/01/2014 22:21

Dominic is nice, as is Quentin (esp for a fifth son!). Love Hermione for a girl.

celestialsquirrelnuts · 26/01/2014 20:16

For boys

celestialsquirrelnuts · 26/01/2014 20:11

Virginia
Such a cool name nobody uses anymore

Mercia

Venetia

Cornelia

Leonie

Tamsin (you obviously like T names)

ancientbuchanan · 26/01/2014 20:06

I know it's not unusual but a variant if Guinivere is Jennifer

ancientbuchanan · 26/01/2014 20:03

Trevelyan is quite nice, any connection there?

Lots of surnames get turned into first names, do you have any suitable ones in your family? Think of all those Normans, Gordons, Camerons,

Walter ?

What do you want to discount? Eg, biblical names, saints names, Greek or Latin names?

ancientbuchanan · 26/01/2014 19:58

Pernelle
Peronelle
Verity
Lavender
Charity
Clarissa
Venetia
Elspeth
Betsy
Horatia
Aphra

Fabian
Hamish
Hector ( and I feel it is v different from Tudor)
Vere
Rollo ( father of William 1)
Roland
Harold
Horace
Horatio
Samson
Joshua
Nahum
Noah
Abel
Jacob

What's the connection between jasper and Tudor? Intrigued.

oldbutnotpastit · 26/01/2014 12:25

stinking really like trinity it was on our shortlist for dd1 but we decided against it . also love Serenity it was on my shortlist for dd5 but dh vetoed it.i also really like Gunevere but no my dh will veto it .
jemima i love the name Jemima but we have a niece with the name so can't use it . Clarissa is on our short list .
Alis really like Jasper and Edmund and actually really like the Tudor linkage . I'm a bit of history nerd . I think only someone really into history would get the link . weirdly dd4 was nearly Jasper when he arrive he looked like Jasper carrot but it didn't last so we went for Gabriel instead.
imperial 10th child we have 5 dds and 4 dss already .
dh has alredy vetoed Lawrence and Harriet .
today the name Trevelyan popped into my head and i quite like it .

Wow have just worked out how many DCs you have! I take my hat off to you. Congratulations on your surprise!

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/01/2014 11:24

old

Romilly is a park in South Wales and a pub and a few road names.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/01/2014 11:23

I was going to suggest Jasper but considering your elder DS's name, maybe not.

T U D O R and Jasper is a bit too history nerd. Though I might just think that because I am a history nerd Grin

ImperialBlether · 26/01/2014 08:18
