Girls name Ottilie

I don't really post here as my dcs are 8 and 6, however my dd said a new girl joined her Brownie pack last night called 'Ottilie'.

I've never heard the name before so looked it up. It's of German origin, meaning 'rich'. I really like it. I thought it may be of use as an idea for someone looking for a girls name.

I know I know 36 year old Ottilie, prior to her I had never heard the name. Now it seems to be very popular with the under 5s!

I know a few of them - about ten years ago three of my cousins had babies called Ottilie all in the same year (different bits of the family; they don’t know each other). And since then a couple of friends have used it too. It exploded out of nowhere!

I know a few Ottillies - all very sweet and suit it.
Some are called Tilly or Ottie for short

I read a really sad book where the main character was a little girl called Ottilie (No child of mine' by Susan Lewis)

Outing myself, but I have a 2yo with that name. We love it and so does she!

We chose it from a name book, totally randomly, because we both liked it and because we didn't know and had never heard of anyone else with that name.

Bizarrely, it seems to have become fashionable, which has really made me wonder how "trends" for these things are set.

We had Ottilie on our list, but went for Corliss instead for our daughter. Other names we had were:

Waverley
Coral
Astrid
Fenella

I could still be tempted to bust Ottilie out for another baby girl. We quite like unusual names! Our surname has a VERY close connection to otters though, so it would probably be a bit too much all together. My DP still goes on that if we had a boy, he'd just like to call him Otter. I've told him no. Obviously.

Lovely name but I too prefer the Ottilia pronunciation, with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable.

My 3-yr-old DD is called Ottilie and my DH and I still absolutely adore it. she loves it too, and insists on being called by her full name rather than her nickname Ottie. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second child and have really struggled to come up with another girl's name that makes my heart sing the way 'Ottilie' does!

I had never heard of this name until about 3 years ago when I overheard a woman telling someone that it was the name of her newborn. I heard it as "Otterly" and couldn't understand why on earth anyone would name their child such a thing! Thanks to MN I have been educated. However, I still don't like it, as someone else has said it's just too reminiscent of otters.

My dad wanted to call me Ottilie when I was born (after a Joan Collins film character I think). It's a pretty name (and one we considered for our soon to be born LO).

My mum wouldn't have it though. And I was given a popular 70s name which although I do like, especially because I know its meaning, I have been told by more than one person is a bit "council estate" - whatever that means!!! Hmm

There is a beautiful John Wyndham story about a man who is pushed into an alternative reality where he is married to an Ottilie Harshom. He is pushed back to his own reality one day, and desperately tries to find her. It is called Random Quest and is a wonderful love story.

I've liked the name Ottilie ever since reading that.
