If we went with the name Maggie for a little girl would we spend the rest of our lives hearing about The Simpsons? Me an DH both like it but he already gets quite a bit of stick from my family about watching that show, even though he doesn't really anymore!

What do you all think?

Maggie is a terrific name. Every Maggie I've known has been gorgeous, too, and just plain fun. It's a name with a lot of personality. Besides Maggie Smith - who is obviously wonderful - you have a whole brigade of young actresses with the name: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maggie Grace, Maggie Lawson, Maggie Q...I could go on! I seriously doubt you would have to worry about a Simpsons reference.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/01/2014 04:50

I have a 2 year old Maggie, short for Magdalen, nobody has ever made a Simpsons or a Thatcher joke.

herecomesthsun · 09/01/2014 04:36

I also did think of Thatcher first!
I like Marguerite as a name, very pretty, but like Meg as a nn better than Maggie. Also Maggie makes me think of magpie and maggot linguistically.

TheFantasticFixit · 08/01/2014 23:43

I'm the OP of the Margot thread - we intend to use Maggie as a nn for our imminent DD. we'd briefly thought about Thatcher but figured with Margot as the full name it's removed enough - and plus, there's an association with every name these days, good or bad depending on the person. If you love it, use it!

DuchessofKirkcaldy · 08/01/2014 23:16

I actually quite like it.....did think of Thatcher though.
If you love it go for it.
My dn was given a name that I had horrible associations with. (abusive uncle)
To begin with I couldn't even say it out loud and refered to him as baby, cutie, sweetie anything but his name.
Almost a year on and I coo his name like everyone else because the name makes me think of HIM.
If I cant get over that then I am sure that oters will get over Thatcher/ Simpson connotations.

Bowlersarm · 08/01/2014 23:00

I like it. Really nice for a little girl, and cool teen and young lady too. Go for it, OP.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 08/01/2014 22:58

sorry I think its an unattractive name

HyvaPaiva · 08/01/2014 22:54

Thatcher. I couldn't use it, sorry.

Clawdy · 08/01/2014 22:49

Apart from the Thatcher link,to me it's a harsh-sounding name for a little girl.

blackandwhiteandredallover · 08/01/2014 19:03

And no I wouldn't think of the simpsons, I think of maggie smith, maggie o'farrell, maggie gyllenhal (actress)

redrubyindigo · 08/01/2014 19:01

I knew a few 'Maggie's as child. It really put me off the name. I think of quilted housecoats, trodden down slippers and a fag.

Showing my age!

blackandwhiteandredallover · 08/01/2014 19:01

I love Maggie, really love it. I just couldn't bring myself to call DD Margaret though and couldn't think of any other names that would have the NN Maggie. It's actualy fine as a stand alone name though!

Thurlow · 08/01/2014 19:01

Gorgeous, gorgeous name, I'm almost certain I want it for any future DDs. Every name has a link somewhere so ignore it!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 08/01/2014 19:00

Maggie is lovely, I wouldn't think of Thatcher - even though I'm an admirer and I've never watched the Simpsons.

Sammie101 · 08/01/2014 18:56

That is the reason my OH gave me for not using Maggie! I still get the rage because I truly love that nameHmm

Frikadellen · 08/01/2014 18:40

Its fab name and no Simpsons didnt occur to me

Thatcher and R Steward did yes.

Perhaps its an age thing?

wigglesrock · 08/01/2014 18:27

I love it too, it's the name of a much loved relative, but tbh my husband couldn't get past the Thatcher connection. Meg floated about as well for dd3 but I just went with something else.

AbiRoad · 08/01/2014 18:04

If it goes with your surname (too long with my surname) I would go with Magdalena nn Maggie.

permaquandry · 08/01/2014 18:00

I love Maggie May (RS song). Was an 80's kid, so Margaret Thatcher is ingrained in my upbringing and have watched most of the Simpsons.

I just think it's a beautiful name and do not think of any of the above, I love it, think you should use it and not worry what other people associate it with.

Moffit · 08/01/2014 17:17

I love Maggie, always seems to be main character in books/films!! I don't associate it with the Simpsons or Thatcher.

rallytog1 · 08/01/2014 14:57

I just think Thatcher I'm afraid. I say this as someone who was all set to call her dd Maggie until the blooming woman went and died the day before dd was born.

PeterParkerSays · 08/01/2014 13:25

If you use Margaret, she can be Maggie or Peggie, depending on what she choses

squoosh · 08/01/2014 13:19

I love Maggie as long as I don't think Thatcher.

Oooops...........................there she is!

BikeRunSki · 08/01/2014 08:25

Thatcher is my immediate association with Maggie, but I am a 40 something lefty and was a politically active teenager during her term in office. I would think thus connection is during out.

Simpsons didn't even cross my mind.

Faverolles · 08/01/2014 08:21

Dd is Maggie. She has never been compared to either the simpsons or to Thatcher.
She likes her name as it's unusual without being too out there.

The only famous Maggie that has been mentioned to her is Dame Maggie Smith, and she is quite proud of the connection (however tenuous it is!)
