I know one little Sally, and I think it is great name.

I also think you need to take this site with a pinch of salt sometimes.

When pregnant with DD2, I asked about her name (Katherine) and got very similar results to you - boring, 1970s, dull name etc... But roll on a few years, and now I see people recommending it all the time Grin.

Like you, I wanted a name that was different to the norm (so not one of a 100 Emilys, Evies, Lillys, Chloes etc), but nothing too out of the norm. For us, Katherine did that, and Sally does the same thing. Everyone knows the name, but chances are she'll be the only child with that name in her school. My children have this, and they rather like it Grin.

Who said it's '70's?
I know four Sally's and they are all in their Fifties which makes it more a 50/60's name.
I like it.

Lovely name.My Gran was Sally and as my first name [not the one I use] is Sarah my dh calls me Sal.
I would have used itfor dd if I hadn't had a falling out with a 'friend' named Sally. I don't know a single one now and I think it is due a comeback.It is so pretty.

Ignore the people who say Sally is boring. I don't get the idea that a name has to be "exciting". Sally is a lovely traditional and currently not all that common name. It's simple and straightforward and doesn't have a stereotypical personality attached to it. Good choice IMHO.

I teach one who is 12. Her name doesn't seem to be a problem for her- doesn't stand out in a bad way, in fact it's great amongst all the Emilys, Charlottes, Eve/Evies and Olivias of her peers (current Y7 appear to be the beginning of these names- at my school anyway). She is the only Sally I've taught in over 10 years as well!

It was on my list for a while but my parents had a (lovely) rescue dog called Sally so felt we couldn't really use it for a child.

I love love love it! I was GOING to be a Sally but then my mum found out that the barmaid at the local pub had that name and was convinced my dad was trying to name me after her!

It's a terrific name! Go for it, OP. I was at school with a lovely Sally. Sallys are Jolly Good Sorts in my experience - brown hair, lively, articulate...

I like it and it helps that I have a lovely friend called Sally. I like that it's a bit different too you don't hear of many Sallys being born.

Thanks for the comments. I hadn't considered it at all until this week but I quite like it now. I like names that are recognisable names but not everywhere and I think this fits the bill! Now just have to convince DH to add it to the list!

I really like it.

It's very familiar, but under-used and so has a refreshing quality about it.

It's great for a young girl, a teen/20-something and for an adult.

I love it! It's unusual.
But totally agree - it's your baby so if you love it choose it.
I don't care what people think of my children's names - it's nice if they like them of course - but I love them and that's what matters.

I feel like you need a bona fide Sally to comment on this thread. :) My formal name is Sara, but since birth I've been called Sally. Although I grew up with a statistically rare name, everyone was familiar with it and everyone could spell and say it with zero difficulty. It's in countless songs - Lay Down Sally, Mustang Sally, Long Tall Sally - and has a wide variety of namesakes and references in pop culture. I've never had to share my name, and as a 20-something it's distinctive for my generation. As a friend put it, "Sally's a great name - nobody else has it!"

Seriously, it wouldn't be on my list because it's not one of my favourites but wouldn't life be boring if we all had the same taste. I think it's nice, it's not weird, it's cute without being stupid on a grown up, and it makes a change from Daisy, Lily, Polly, Molly, Tilly.

I know two lovely adult Sallys (one late 50s, one late 30s), but have never met a small one - think it would be great on a little girl!
