Middle names for Sebastian and Rafferty

Hi all,

I am hoping for your help. I'm pregnant with a boy, only 23 weeks but now we know it's a boy our conversation usually comes around to names.

My DH and I can't agree on our favourite. His favourite is Sebastian, mine is Rafferty. I'm hoping that you can suggest some middle names which go well with either which might help us think which one we like better. Think we'll wait til he arrives and see what he looks like before we pick the name for definite, but thought it would be good to have some options.

something very short and plain, to set Rafferty off (Sebastian's OK but I hate Seb). One syllable. Can't actually think of anything off the top of my head!

Rafferty for me sounds like taffeta. Ridiculous and not very helpful!

Don't bring a child called Rafferty to Newcastle. With the recent vogue for naming kids after their places of conception, Rafferty's is one of Newcastle's more "characterful" pubs.

I don't really see the point in a middle name for decoration only. Family traditions etc are understandable.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I knew that Rafferty might have a bit of a marmite effect, but I still love it. I suppose the fact that it's only in the top 300 means it won't be for lots of people but I really like that it isn't going to be too common too.

However all if your suggestions are definitely increasing my love of Sebastian, so that's really good too.

Like Joseph with either first name choice.

OP I didnt think you were really asking opinions about your and partner's fav name choices - don't let folk put you off either name and go for the one you love that 'suits' him when he comes :-)

Sometimes the way the names sound together depends on your surname - can you tell us the first initial and or number of syllables?

I like James, John, Edward & George as middle names for both, I like Seb Joseph better than Raf Joseph.

We waited until they arrived to name both our boys, DS1 didn't have a name until he was 5 days old, DS2 we didn't settle on a name until he was a month old Blush

Sebastian joseph is gorgeous. Not keen on Rafferty, I know its a boys name but its always seemed a bit frilly and feminine to me, sorry

Yes I'd say it wasn't at all posh, but who cares! If you like it, go for it. And I think Joseph sounds nice with both names.

Um no, it really isn't. I'm not saying it's 'chavvy' but it's just a surname. It's like saying Smith or Robinson are super posh.

I can't think of a single 'super-posh' Rafferty. I can think of several well-known Ralphs ( can be pronounced as Rafe).

Sorry - In my book Rafferty is one of those surnames-being-used-as-first-names, which is not posh.

Think Sebastian Joseph sounds nice....although if you are really set on Rafferty then you should use it. I mean how often does a child ever use its middle name. Don't let that influence your decision. Personally I like both the names of your choice.

Rafferty is super posh but I love it! It's so cool and quirky. Raffi is a very cute nickname. I don't like Rafe.

Sebastian is ok. I've taught lots and lots though (private school) whereas I've never yet come across a Rafferty.

I really like Raphael, but in my Geordie accent it feels like it's a bit too Mediterranean and exotic for us.

I don't mind Sebastian too much, but I'm not too keen on Seb, and with the name being fairly long I imagine we'll revert to nicknames with it. DH likes the idea of Bastian for a nickname but that reminds me of Bastard which isn't what I was intending for PFB.
