There is a middle ground - lots and lots of beautiful classic underused names that are outside the top 100!

There are 3 Lilys in my dd's class as well as 2 Ellies and 2 Harrys. It can be a pain, especially if they share the same surname initial!

There are SO many names - let's all be a little more encouraging of name diversity!!

In dd's class their are 4 Lily's. Two spelt like Lily, one spelt like Lilly and another spelt Lillie and she's in year 9!

Meh. We also have an Alexandra (not that popular) and a Charlie (Charles). We chose them because we didn't want them to face a lifetime of ridicule for having names that we chose for the sake of them being different. And it was all we could agree on

Most classes have a jack or lily. Eve and its variants the most popular here at one stage one third of the girls in dds class named eve or a variant of eve. When names become so popular they lose all charm sadly. There are so many great names out there why do people all pick the same ones!?

I'm pretty sure both Ian and Jack are variations of John, so Ian isn't a complete unJack!!

Lily-Jack is ok, and for the younger brother Lil' Jack is an option.
But people should just get brave and start calling their kids Jackass, Hijack and Carjack

And for girls there's always Tigerlily, Waterlily or, at a push, Lilyofthevalley.

Where are all these jacks?

Ihave a jack and he has been through nursery and 3 schools and only met one other jack.

I don't know of any other jacks personally but 2 people from work have a jack. I know loads of children.

Never met a baby Lily either. The only one I know is 80+

That said i love the daily mash. Very funny

I wanted to call ds Jack but decided it was too popular. I have only met one in seven years, there are however three other children with his name in his class this year

My dd is lily, after my nan and I still love it and it suits her completely - but everywhere we go we encounter another lily or 2, and it does make me wonder whether we should've picked something else.

5 Jack's? Bloody hell. For some reason my Jack answer quite happily to Elizabeth so I'll just keep calling him that. Or his preferred and rather apt choice of Loki!

I know 2 Lilly's (1 is DSD) and 3 jacks. I work in a nursery and we never have more than one of them. Usually multiple Thomas's though.

How popular are the names really though? I know about 150 kids, 3 are called Jack and two called Lily.

I think we sometimes forget WHY we name a person?!

We name him/her so that he/she can be identified as uniquely as possible. Being one of four Lilys or five Jacks (or Evie, Harry or other super popular name) doesn't excactly do that - they need to add a modifier (surname initial or other adjective) to be identified.

There are 1000s of lovely names out there - lets make some use of them!
