If you named your kid these, would you consider it a boy or a girl name?

Sidney/Sydney?
For me, Sidney for a boy obviously, and Sydney for a girl. If hearing them, without knowing spelling, I would assume girl.

Quinn?
I would always assume a boy. I have heard of a few girls called Quinn though, but I always thought it was masculine?

Parker?
For me, a boy name would be my preference, although obviously as unisex it can be both, but I know quite a few girls called Parker (nn Kerry).

Cameron (and Cameryn etc;)?
To me, Cameron is a boy name. I know a girl called Cameryn though.

Aubrey?
I didn't know it used to be a boy name!

Riley (Rylee, Rileigh etc;)?
I like it for a boy but know two girls called a variant of Riley. Smile

Kelly?
Dylan/Dillon?
Jordan (Jordyn)?
Taylor?
Cassidy?
Bailey?
Morgan?
Ashley?
Casey?
I know a girl called Casey and two boys, one called KC and one called Kasey.

Just wondering! Smile Any other unisex names which you naturally assume to be one gender?

The rather masculine (lovely, muscly arms) lead singer of Stereophonics is called Kelly.

Aubrey - boy or daughter of a dyslexic parent who unfortunately mistook if for Audrey.

Unless the parents are American in which case all bets are off.

Thing is, you don't choose names like that if you care if the child's gender is mistaken, do you? It's part of the appeal of endogenous names, I thought.

Girls: Aubrey, Kelly, Cassidy, Ashley

Boys: Quinn, Parker, Cameron, Riley, Dillon, Bailey, Morgan, Casey (although I know a girl one)

Either: Sidney, Jordan, Taylor

I would assume Cassidy and Kelly to be girls, the rest boys. I would be surprised to meet a boy called Kelly or a girl called Parker or Dylan or Aubrey, but the others are more unisex IMO.

I would assume most were boys tbh, except Cassidy and Kelly, but I wouldn't necessarily be surprised to find I was wrong.

I don't like Sydney, Cameryn, Rylee, Rileigh and Jordyn as attempts to make the names more feminine. They just look like cre8tive spellings. The traditional spellings are much better imo

I would think all were boys apart from Kelly and Cassidy.

I do know a female Ashleigh though first thought would be boy (and spelt Ashley).

I know of a female Robyn, Drew, Glenn, Toni and Terri which all seem more like boys names to me (though spelt Robin, Drew, Glen, Tony and Terry).

I also know a male Lindsay though definitely see this as a girls name.

A mix on those. Boys to me would be Sidney, Quinn, Parker, Cameron, Riley, Dylan, Jordan, Bailey, Ashley and Casey. Girls would be Sydney, Aubrey, Kelly, Taylor, Cassidy and probably Morgan, though I have heard for that for a boy as well.

Interestingly, DD has a genuinely unisex name (the 'A' one that is a normal shortening for both a common boys and a common girls name, so with the same spelling for both sexes). Despite calling my own daughter that name, if I just read it written down i.e. Axxx Smith, I tend to think they will be a man Confused

Apart from Kelly, I would assume the owners of all the names you listed were boys unless I was told otherwise (or it was obvious on meeting the child/person!).

I think if you asked the same question on a US website you'd get quite a different response - they seem to love unisex names and I do think it's filtering through to the UK!

Sorry, but I have no idea where this god awful obsession with substituting letters for a 'Y' as a girly alternative came from. We have a DD who is Cameron. Not Cameryn or any other such nonsense. Why why why change a beautiful name and make it (in my opinion) somehow less. Sorry rant over. Smile
