Would it bother you....

If someone used your child's very unique middle name as a first name for their child who was only a few weeks apart in age?

With lots of friends and family in common.

It would probably bother me a little, yes, but not as much if they had used the same FIRST name.

strawberrypenguin · 03/12/2013 07:49

Yes it would annoy me! My SIL used our DS's middle name for her DS and I'm still annoyed. I know no one owns a name etc but its still annoying!

Fifibluebell · 03/12/2013 07:44

Yup would bother me! Which is petty but it still would!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/11/2013 10:37

Unless it's something like "Lobsterbreath" or "FGWKXIBE" I doubt it's a unique name, probably something like "Storm" I.e. an unusual name. Did you and husband actually make up the names OP?

throckenholt · 30/11/2013 10:27

DH just mentioned this to me later casually because he couldn't care less and doesn't see my problem.

What is the problem ? No-one owns a name. And to be honest a second name is neither here nor there - very few people will ever use it , and even fewer people know other people's middle name.

Get over it - you chose the name you liked, that is all that matters.

lljkk · 30/11/2013 10:26

My dad's forename was made up by his aunt; and he's not the only one now!! Quick shocking to find another several others.

My grandmother has forename that only like 800 girls in the whole of USA in 1925. Yet there exists another lady with [grandma's forename] with her original married name (not a common surname, either). They only differ by middle initial.

The spelling of my forename was made up, I don't think there are any others, but eventually there will be.

janey68 · 30/11/2013 10:13

Unless the name was actually made up by you, it isn't unique. It may be a name that's not commonly used, but it would only be unique if it were invented by you and your child is the only one in the world with that name.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 30/11/2013 09:59

Being completely honest, I think it would depend on how much I liked them and if they asked me how I'd feel about it.

Bowlersarm · 30/11/2013 09:52

I think it's fine as they've mentioned to your DH that the inspiration has come from you.

You can tell your dd her little friend/relative was named after her because her parents loved her name so much.

janey68 · 30/11/2013 09:49

Middle names are rarely used apart from occasionally on official forms. I don't remember the middle names of my friends and relatives children (though I suspect I was told at some point!)

If they had copied a very unusual first name I would see your point, because that's the name that's used constantly. Particularly as it sounds as though its a made up name by you and your DH. But a middle name- no, I can't see the problem, though if it is an 'invented' name it does seem a little odd - though I'm not a fan of made up names anyway

If its not a made up name, just a very unusual one, then you have even less reason to be miffed. No one owns a name

ThanSheSaid · 30/11/2013 09:48

I used my nieghbours cats name for my son but I don't think she minded. It was a bit confusing when she called the cat in from the garden though Smile
I would be flattered if someone used my DCs middle name. Middle names are not usually used.

8thplace · 30/11/2013 09:29

I suspect your very unique middle name isn't really that unique at all.

lljkk · 30/11/2013 09:07

I would think "Oh they share our taste in names" and congratulate them on their taste.
^This.

smokeandglitter · 30/11/2013 08:54

It would annoy me but I'd know I was being a bit irrational.

Reminds me of the SATC episode where Charlotte's baby name gets stolen Grin

MrsJK · 30/11/2013 08:48

Hmm well if you came up with the name first I would say go for it - they obviously know they "copied" it from you just shame their baby was born first.

Please share the name Wink

MaryAnnTheDasher · 30/11/2013 08:21

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest! No one owns the names they give their children!

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/11/2013 20:36

It would annoy me. But in a "I know I can't say anything without sounding a bit bonkers" way.

bebopanddoowop · 29/11/2013 14:21

It depends who it was. If it was my sister id think it was a cute thing to do.. If it was a friend is think it was a bit weird and not like it but keep it to myself and silently stew haha

mumbaisapphire · 29/11/2013 14:16

It's fine. They've found inspiration from your child's middle name. People will (if they haven't already) forget what your baby's middle name is. Be gracious and take it as a compliment.

Yabu.

MelanieCheeks · 29/11/2013 13:23

How can something be very unique? It either is or it isn't.

WhispersOfWickedness · 29/11/2013 13:22

Sorry, didn't really answer your question. No, it wouldn't bother me at all, or if you used the first names, I would be flattered, tbh!

WhispersOfWickedness · 29/11/2013 13:20

I would think you were very brave or very boring, depending on which DC's name you used Grin Both my DC have family names as their middle names, so neither are names I would ever have picked as first names!

curiousgeorgie · 29/11/2013 13:18

And they weren't thinking if it before... They got it from us. Her DH said to mine, we love your DD's name, we're going to use the middle name for our baby.

And DH just mentioned this to me later casually because he couldn't care less and doesn't see my problem.
