My boss is called Robert. And my brother in law. So....one against, one for!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 24/11/2013 20:38

I had a thread about Robert a month ago (as Horryisupduffed if that helps you search).

The responses were generally favourable - the consensus was "underused classic" with a few people disliking it.

We didn't use it in the end because DH got cold feet, but it was a serious contender.

sonlypuppyfat · 24/11/2013 20:38

Nice proper name.

Judyandherdreamofhorses · 24/11/2013 21:10

Love it. Nearly picked it (went for Simon).

nurseneedshelp · 24/11/2013 21:13

No.......

Crownjewel · 24/11/2013 21:14

Always loved it (until I got with an ex called Robert!)

Now it reminds me of that track by Foster the People ("Robert's got a quick hand...)

LiberalPedant · 24/11/2013 21:15

Yes (it's my son's name) Smile

Panzee · 24/11/2013 21:16

I nearly picked it too. I like it. Great nickname potential.

somewhereinessex · 24/11/2013 21:19

My son's middle name and my dad's name - I like it.

ToffeeJungle · 24/11/2013 21:25

I quite like it - inoffensive, classic, not too popular (these days).
Like Robbie as a nn - Rob isn't bad either though dislike Bob / Bobby.
Would see it in the same vein as Michael,.David, John, Andrew, Paul etc.

Ilovekittyelise · 24/11/2013 21:26

thanks for the replies. its a brother for samuel (always sam) and hard to find something we love. go through phases of finding a name and going off it. other contenders:

james (but sam was called james in utero so feels a bit odd!)
joseph (not keen on joe which is kind of inevitable)
toby (tobias).
thomas, known as tom.
harry (which appears to be getting over its crazy popularity hump). but hate harrison and henry and feel need for "formal" name.
nathaniel.

hmmmm. this is going to be another last minute one i can tell!

Love it.

My DS2's name.

Ilovekittyelise · 24/11/2013 21:30

also.......my brothers called robert but is flattered rather than freaked.

i have quite an unusual name and awful maiden name so i want something classic but also something that is fairly "class neutral" ie not chavvy nor trying to be posh.something that wouldnt sound ridiculous in any walk of life.

Bowlersarm · 24/11/2013 21:32

Love Robert. Classic and underused.

I like your list. Don't go for Joseph if you don't like Joe.

theignored · 24/11/2013 21:36

my ds is Robert, classic and have never met another child Robert.

please don't use I'm not even joking

KatOD · 24/11/2013 21:50

Love it! (Massive cure fan)

honeybeeridiculous · 25/11/2013 13:33

It's solid rather than dashing, but a good classic name.

And I know several lovely ones - from age 8 to early 90s.

Ilovekittyelise · 27/11/2013 21:48

oooohhhh med, can you suggest some dashing ones too id rather like a dashing name [thinks of darcy]

I will out myself to anyone who knows my family now, but dhs middle name is Robert, his grandfathers first name was Robert, FIL middle name is Robert, ds1 middle name is Robert, ds2 middle name is Robert. I am currently pg with dc3 and guess what it's sodding middle name is going to be if a boy? Yes you're right. Although I have put my foot down and said that it also has to have another as I feel hard done by not being able to choose lovely second-in-line names! If this one is a girl it it'll have two middle names also, one being Roberta (which I actually love).

Honestly though? I don't think Robert is interesting enough for a first name. It's bland and forgettable, like Paul Michael Stephen Simon John David etc- well used and loved in previous generations but so familiar that they are a bit dull.

meditrina · 28/11/2013 09:13

Dashing?

A bit difficult, as some names I think are dashing are associated with people I've known!

For starters: Blaise; Sasha or Xander as nn for Alexander; Sebastian, Troy, Errol, Marcus, Dominic?

Ilovekittyelise · 28/11/2013 18:47

im kind of finding now that my husband has finally agreed to it, im losing interest in it (age old courtship behaviour LOL). hmmm, sebastian is one that i go back and forth on. i like it today.
