My husband is Spanish and we need a name for ds3. We both love Indio (which is Spanish in origin) and Indie for short. Brothers are Louis & Oscar so I think it makes a cool little team. Opinions??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ummm just my opinion but we nearly called our son this and lots of people instantly said "indiana jones" which put us off ! Sorry.

veee123 · 23/11/2013 14:25

No it sounds feminine. Doesn't really match with siblings either.

MamaLazarou · 23/11/2013 14:28

If you love it and have decided on it, then canvassing for opinions will not end well.

tracypenisbeaker · 23/11/2013 14:30

I like it.

Fairylea those people sound like morons- there's nothing more annoying than people trying to come up with the laziest nearest link possible to put you off. Like my brother is called Ralph, and when he was born every other person was saying 'Oh after Ralph Wiggum/ Ralph Lauren/ Ralph Fiennes' (even though Ralph Fiennes is pronounced 'Rafe')

Sammie101 · 23/11/2013 14:33

I was just about to say "I love it!", then I saw it's for your DS...and thinking about it...I STILL love it! Yes it does have the Indiana Jones link but Indiana Jones was cool (and sexy, not that you care about that when it's linked to your son...) so IMO if it doesn't bother you then go for it Grin

squoosh · 23/11/2013 14:36

I think although I may be wrong that in South America 'Indio' is used as a racial slur against indigenous people.

tracypenisbeaker · 23/11/2013 14:37

Fairylea NOT saying you're a moron at all by the way- you were giving your personal reasons as to why you didn't choose it- you're more than qualified to give your input here... It is annoying when people ruin a name for you when you don't ask their opinion!

tracypenisbeaker · 23/11/2013 14:41

ooh apparently Robert Downey Jnr's son is named Indio.

Fairylea · 23/11/2013 14:42

It's fine tracy, I know what you meant :)

Weeantwee · 23/11/2013 14:42

I like Indio but don't see why you would need to shorten it to Indie. Especially with the added 'e'.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 23/11/2013 14:48

I had to look twice, I thought it was India - then assumed it was a typo.

I wouldn't.

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy · 23/11/2013 14:55

Squoosh is correct, in areas that were colonized by Spain, this was a word for the indigenous population, including South America and even more so in their later colonies in the Pacific. It originates in Spanish because they invented it to categorize people, not as a name for a person or an exonym for a nation of people because it homogenized pretty much all of them together. It's an outdated racial category that has a long history as a slur.

So, I would suggest having more of a Google and Wiki of it. I think it would cause a lot of raised eyebrows.

Blatherskite · 23/11/2013 14:59

Jodie Kidd's Son is called Indio. There is an Indie at DD's pre school but his full name is Indiana.

I'm not sure I'd use it. I'm not sure it goes with the other two and makes me want to quote Princess Bride - "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." I know it's not the same name but it's close.

But then it's not my child. If you love it, use it. The world would be a very boring place if we were all the same.
