Nicknames for Rebecca that aren't Becky/Becca?

mich161616 · 18/11/2013 14:08

Hi,

DH and I really like Rebecca as a name but I really don't like Becky or Becca as a nickname. I just think that even if I always say Rebecca it's so long that others won't and Becky is an inevitability. Can anyone think of any (pretty) alternatives that we could use?

Thanks

"DH and I really like Rebecca as a name but I really don't like Becky or Becca as a nickname"

Then I strongly suggest you choose another name. One whose nicknames you'd be happy with.

Pantsalive · 05/10/2015 13:29

I also know a Bea.

bruffin · 05/10/2015 13:24

My Rebecca is Bex, Becky, Becca, Rebop . It's DD's name and her nickname is up to her and not me (dont understand parents who think they can dictate their child's nickname, they sound far too controlling)

maybebabybee · 05/10/2015 13:04

My boss is Rebecca and never, ever uses Becky or Becca etc, just Rebecca. It's perfectly doable. People don't tend to shorten names unless you shorten them yourself.

ServingSuggestion · 05/10/2015 12:40

I am Rebecca at work and Bex everywhere else.

I hate people shortening my name (especially to Becky - eurgh) without asking what I prefer to be called. In turn I never shorten names without asking.

One primary school teacher used to refer to me as Rebecki Hmm

manicinsomniac · 05/10/2015 00:19

I'm a Rebecca. I usually go by Rebecca although family use Becky. I'm not keen on Becky but I don't hate it.

I have a young cousin (sort of cousin - cousin's kid) who is Rebecca and never anything else. Doesn't have to be shortened.

As a teenager I tried to make Rivkah work for a while - it's a Hebrew version. But it didn't catch on. Proof that you can't force a nickname I suppose.

Neddyteddy · 04/10/2015 23:36

Bea

CocktailQueen · 04/10/2015 23:32

Five Rebeccas? We only know one other, and dd is 11! How old are your Rebecca's?

mathanxiety · 04/10/2015 23:15

How about Rivka or Revka, both Hebrew versions.

Or Rifka, Rifke, Rheba, Riva, Rivah, Rivalee, Rivi, Rivy, all Yiddish.

DPotter · 04/10/2015 22:21

There are 5 Rebecca's in DD class at school. Just saying....

SixFeetUnder · 04/10/2015 22:17

I'm a Rebecca who is usually called Rebecca. My husband calls me becca so is his affectionate name for me and some old workmates call me becks but everyday I'm called Rebecca and prefer that. Only people who wish to annoy me call me becky as I've said I hate this at every opportunity.

Rivercam · 04/10/2015 22:13

We refer to a friend called Rebecca as Reebok.

Ipushedmygrannyaffabus · 04/10/2015 22:07

My neighbour was Known as Ruby but her full name was Rebecca

uggmum · 04/10/2015 20:56

I'm a Rebecca. I like my name shortened to Becca,Bec or Bex.

I hardly ever get called Rebecca.

EmmaWoodlouse · 04/10/2015 20:51

I know a Rebecca who prefers being called Rebs to Becky, but I've also known several who are never shortened - it's not inevitable.

18 year old DS knows someone who always used to be Becki and has now settled on Beck.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/10/2015 19:22

*can't dictate not can dictate.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/10/2015 19:21

Avoid a name if you don't like the potential nns. All very well you not liking Becky or Becca, but the bottom line is. It's not your name. You can dictate to your dd what name she uses. If she wants Becky as a nn. Then tough!. Like I said it's her name.

SmugairleRoin · 04/10/2015 18:53

As pps have said, if you don't like Becky or Becca don't use Rebecca. You might hate those nicknames, but it will be her name and she may well decide to use those.

sooperdooper · 04/10/2015 18:36

Your Dd could grow up and decide herself she wants to be Becky or Becs or whatever variation she wants - if you don't like those versions dont pick the name, because you simply can't control what she might decide once she's old enough to choose herself

Mossyoakgirl239 · 04/10/2015 18:29

My name is Rebecca and I don't like Becky and becca is ok but I go by Rebecca and sometimes my friends call me rebbie

mimbleandlittlemy · 19/11/2013 17:57

I am a Rebecca. People who shorten it don't make the same mistake twice Grin

goodtimesinbontemps · 19/11/2013 08:05

Dn is Rebecca and is generally called Rebecca or Becca, never Becky thank goodness because I really dislike that nn. I like the name Rebecca but don't like any of the usual nicknames. Someone said Ruby above which is lovely but to my mind its a completely different name.

nooka · 19/11/2013 08:02

As an adult you can choose what you are called, but you do need to be quite firm about it. I simply don't respond when people try the obvious shortening of my name, and they very rarely do it twice. However it is an unusual name so perhaps easier.

The problem with calling your dd a name with a very common shortening is not so much that other people may call her that, it is that she will decide that's what she wants to be called.

So if you really don't like Becca/Becky then Rebecca is probably not a good choice, however much you like it.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 19/11/2013 07:52

People will call you what they want, regardless. Years of having my nice name shortened to the awful 'Izzy' confirm that.

Having said that, my Dad has a name that comes with a variety of abbreviations and it is never shortened.

Rebs or Rebbie?
