Latin/Scottish. Need help from Scots!

I've posted before on Chat and got unanimous (unheard of?) thumbs up for "Harris" but having huge second thoughts.

Multicultural family; I'm Southern European and DH is Scottish.
We have decided on a Scottish name for this boy, who's due in 1 week.

DD is 19 months and has a staunchly Latin / Mediterranean name (Maria Francesca) - named after both my grandmothers, Maria is the most classic name in my country, used for saints and queens, very traditional.

And there lies the problem, I really love the sound of Harris but it's so modern and trendy (and that's not my bag)

I adore Angus, but DH thinks it's meaty/steaky.
I suggested Sholto and he just laughed.

I could potentially convince him on Hamish, which I also love.

Any thoughts?

waves hi weegiemum! Great suggestions.

Re:Jamie. Could you go for James (or Santiago/Tiago) or Seamus and use Jamie as a nn?

I lived in Harris for 10 years, it's an awesome place. Possibly use Hearradh - pronounced "Hay-rooch" which is the Gaelic spelling.

Sounds like he's very against any trad. Scottish name though. My dc go to a specialist Gaelic speaking school, so current options they know and they suggest currently in their class are:

Seamus, Pol, Seonaidh, Seoras, Andrew, Lewis, Lorn, Logan, Seamus, Ruairaidh, Muiraich, Brodie, Struan, Sorley, Gregor, Brian, Duncan, Fionn, Fraser, Cameron, Scott, Innes, Lachlann, Arran.

HTH.

Has Magnus been mentioned?

TensionSquealsGhoulsHeels · 11/11/2013 16:36

Tiree? I know a Tiree and he's a lovely wee boy Smile

forgetmenots · 11/11/2013 16:34

I'm a bit meh on Jamie too OP, though I know a wee one and he is lovely - it sounds like your DH feels your suggestions are a bit too Scottish ( I say this as a Scottish person!)

I disagree of course Grin but might be worth looking to more subtle choices... Stuart, Fraser, Keir, Gregor (all already mentioned but maybe more in keeping with this?)

PoppyAmex · 11/11/2013 16:26

Thanks, everyone.

Some good suggestions that I can't use either because we have children with the same name in the family or because of pronunciation difficulties.

I'm still in love with Angus and Hamish but DH is not budging at all. Angry

We do have a new contender that I'm a bit "meh" about but we both agree it's acceptable - thoughts on Jamie, please?

I know a little Angus and it suits him perfectly, a strong boy. Agree that Alexander gives you plenty of options, but prefer Angus/Hamish etc.
Gregor?

Tattiesthroughthebree · 09/11/2013 16:18

Alexander goes beautifully with Maria Francesca. It sounds Scottish, but will also be understandable to Italian relatives.

carrielou2007 · 09/11/2013 13:46

Hamish is fabulous name do live Angus but too similar to dc2 Archie. Not Scottish just love them Grin

Oriunda · 09/11/2013 06:45

Sandro? Similar to Sandy, could be short for Alessandro if you want longer name, or of course Alex, plus you get your saints name.

beatricequimby · 08/11/2013 21:58

Harris can also be a Pakistani name. I know a lot of Scottish Pakistani families who use it because it works well in both cultures. I think its a lovely name.

How about Alexander (or a Southern European version if there is one?) Would Sandy work?
Douglas
Malcolm
Stuart
Calum
Archie

BillyBanter · 08/11/2013 21:34

James is more on a par with Maria. Ancient, classic and never really out of fashion.

Andrew could also be considered to be on a par being the Scottish saint but not very fashionable now I don't think.

Groovee · 08/11/2013 21:28

We have a Murray. We didn't know until we named him that there was a family connection.

I do like Harris too. I know of one. So it's not overly popular.

CocktailQueen · 08/11/2013 21:26

Fraser
Cameron
Finlay
Struan
Hector
Arran - spelled like the island!
Alexander
Hamish
Euan
Keir
Angus...

All good Scottish names! And I like Harris - not modern at all!!

PrimalLass · 08/11/2013 21:23

CordeliaRose I know two kids called Harris.

PrimalLass · 08/11/2013 21:20

I think Harris is a great name, not modern/trendy at all IMO. DS's middle name is Murdo (family name). I also like Fergus and Archie.

CordeliaRose · 08/11/2013 21:12

I'm Scottish, and I've never heard of anyone called Harris. I don't think I'd necessarily associate the name with the island, so probably wouldn't think of it as a Scottish name!
Alexander
Alistair
Angus
Calum
Cameron
Ewan
Fergus
Graham
Gregor
Hamish
Ian
Lewis
Moray
Murray
Niall
Scott

I'm Scottish. On our boys list we also have Harris. As well as Fraser, Struan, fergus, angus (with alternative spellings). In our family we've already got Kester which is apparently Scottish for kristofer (although I haven't seen it on any website!!).

Meringue33 · 08/11/2013 15:05

I love

Hamish
Lewis
Fergus
Ruaridh
Alasdhair
Diarmid

I know a newborn Murdo

Oriunda · 08/11/2013 14:00

Cosmo? DH is Italian and DS is named after his father (Cosimo) but was under impression Cosmo also has some Scottish link?

Mutteroo · 08/11/2013 12:22

Not impressed with the name Harris, but love Sholto. Angus seems to be gaining in popularity again. It's your baby though & you call him whatever you feel comfortable with. If Harris doesn't feel right, then you've plenty of good names to choose from!
