I did a search on Mumsnet for threads containing this name and the only bad things people mentioned were the Cornish comedian and that it's a bit redneck/hillbilly.

I think most people of my parents generation (I'm 29) would make the comedian association but I don't think people my age and certainly my childrens age would think of him straight away. I also think people would have said Seth was too redneck/hillbilly/farmer a few years ago and now it's quite popular so obviously I'm just cooler than you! Wink

So any other thoughts about Jethro? Will it become trendy do to it's 'O' ending? Like Milo, Otto, Arlo etc?

I like it. First association to me these days is Gibbs; before NCIS it would have been Tull. Neither of which would put me off.

MabelSideswipe · 10/11/2013 11:59

I take that back.... Have now googled. Was thinking of someone else. He is Des o'connors favourite comedian....high praise!!!

MabelSideswipe · 10/11/2013 11:56

The comedian was more famous in 80's. He is or was very rude so was not on TV. He was talked about in the same way as Roy Chubby Brown.

CarryOnDancing · 10/11/2013 10:05

I don't love it but I don't think it's crazy or too different to worry. I don't know any but it's not unheard of so I wouldn't think twice. If anything I'd just think "thank goodness, not another Oliver, Freddie, Harry etc"
I don't make the band or comedian connections, so to me it's just a "cool" sounding name.

Use it!!

Astarael · 09/11/2013 22:10

Another one who thinks of Gibbs from ncis. Who is totally great btw. I like it Smile

squoosh · 09/11/2013 16:22

This Jethro comedian fella can't be that funny if only Cornish people have ever heard of him!

Layl77 · 09/11/2013 16:20

Nooo I'd laugh!

SS3J · 09/11/2013 15:00

I wanted this name for my boy, but partner vetoed it! Use it! I think it is great, and Jet is a perfect shortening if you want one.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/11/2013 14:14

I am younger than you and immediately think "Tull". Sorry.

Puffykins · 09/11/2013 13:04

My art history teacher at school was called Jethro, and he was VERY cool.

IslaValargeone · 09/11/2013 13:02

I'm afraid when I heard it I immediately played the banjos from 'Deliverance'

DumSpiroSpero · 09/11/2013 13:00

My first thought on seeing the thread title was 'please tell me someone's not thinking of inflicting that on a baby'!

I'm only 38 and live in the SE but have known of the comedian for years - I believe his comedy tends towards the dubious too.

If your heart's set on it though and you don't think many people where you are will make the association, it's not bad as names go - for me it's just the connection that would be off putting.

canadajin · 09/11/2013 12:26

Love it!!! I'm foreign so no idea who the comedian is, just made me think of the band.

GillyBillyWilly · 09/11/2013 12:22

I immediately think of the comedian.....however im from the southwest and he's a family friend of my best friend! Grin
It's actually quite a cool name though!

imofftolisdoonvarna · 09/11/2013 12:20

My first thought was the fat Cornish comedian Grin but actually, I do think it could morph into quite a cool name, along the same lines as Milo, Arlo etc. Its biblical isn't it?

StarsAboveYou · 07/11/2013 22:43

Another one who thought of Gibbs from NCIS here Grin

moas · 07/11/2013 22:41

Oh, forgot my favourite O-ending name: MURDO.

moas · 07/11/2013 22:40

I like it! Did think of the band but don't let that bother you, or the comedian for that matter. People get used to names very quickly. My ds is called Axel and first time someone meets him they might go "Axel Foley" or "Axl Rose", doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'd rather that than a boring common name.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 07/11/2013 18:29

Jet is a cool nickname though

JazzAnnNonMouse · 07/11/2013 18:01

Never heard of the comedian but agree it sounds a bit Texas hillbilly - it also sounds like 'death row' sorry!

MabelSideswipe · 07/11/2013 17:43

I heard a mum calling her toddler this recently. I did think of the awful comedian but then I am older than you.

I have a Seth and no one has ever said anything about farmers or hillbillies etc. They used to say stuff about Seth from Emmerdale but then he left the programme and then died so nothing for years!

Nataleejah · 07/11/2013 17:40

Quite nice

Northumberlandlass · 07/11/2013 13:28

Gibbs from NCIS.

I think it's a very cool name though.

GrandOldDukeOfBabies · 07/11/2013 13:28

How far are you away from Cornwall? I'm your age and Cornish - I would be thinking 'What 'appended was.......' Every time I heard his name (reference to Cornish comedian!) However I wouldn't have thought many people away from the South West would know him.

Bowlersarm · 07/11/2013 13:11

I have no idea who a comedian called Jethro is.

Cool name. I imagine a cool teen.

And Jet is a punchy nn.
