We have a short list of sorts and would like some opinions please. What do you think of any of these and what's your favourite?
We don't want anything too popular but also don't want him to feel embarrassed if he doesn't share our taste!

Alvin
Felix
Baxter
Robin
Julius nn Jules
Irwin
Irvin
Lance
Arnold
Alexander but nn Lex not Alex or Xander

I like Robin, Felix and Alexander (it's my brother's name and I've always loved it). Would definitely keep these in the mix.

Would remove Alvin (there's no getting away from those chipmunks!), Irwin/Irvin/Arnold, all of whom sound like cantankerous old men, and Lance, which just sounds unpleasant. Julius and Baxter are OK, although I've come across loads of dogs called Baxter (and I'm not usually one to dismiss a name because it sounds like a pet!)

And I'm definitely with you about preferring Laurence - infinitely better imo.

Lubiloo · 31/10/2013 14:12

Really like Julius! And Robin is nice too.

squoosh · 31/10/2013 13:14

Alvin - and the Chipmunks
Felix - weedy
Baxter - icky tinned soup
Robin - weedy
Julius nn Jules - I like this one (woo hoo!)
Irwin - surname, not one I can imagine as a first name
Irvin - same
Lance - Armstrong (Boooooooooooooooo!)
Arnold - Schwarznegger
Alexander but nn Lex not Alex or Xander - this is ok

Spaghettinetti · 31/10/2013 12:51

You've picked some good names there, quite a few are on my list too.

At my scan, a few weeks ago, I shouted out that my baby looked like Julius Caesar (there's a pretty good sized nose on the baby) and said that I'd be calling my little one Julius, which my hubby didn't seem to be too pleased about!

Alexander is a good solid name, I'm sure you know the meaning; I always thought this would be my first choice; my problem is that I've taught too many naughty boys called Alex!

I'm sure you'll decide on the right name to suit your baby when he appears! :-)

sonlypuppyfat · 29/10/2013 21:46

Alexander is the only nice one and you know his mates will call him Alex. Lex is a bit daft sorry

Vijac · 29/10/2013 21:42

I meant Irwin, not Edwin. Baxter is also not good, but Basil is ok if that's a option.

Wishfulmakeupping · 29/10/2013 21:34

Like Laurence too very underused too

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/10/2013 20:39

Love Robin. Don't like any of the others, sorry.

Love Laurence. I don't like Julius but I do like Julian.

TheNunsOfGavarone · 29/10/2013 18:43

The only ones I like are Julius and Alexander.

Bowlersarm · 29/10/2013 18:15

I like Felix Robin and Alexander nn Lex

fussychica · 29/10/2013 18:12

I loved Alexander too but liked Adam more as I thought the former would be shortened. I'm a traditionalist tooGrin

Mim78 · 29/10/2013 15:38

The only one of the above I like is Alexander. But I think I like more traditional names than you do!

bundaberg · 29/10/2013 15:07

Robin is my favourite

noodlebum · 29/10/2013 15:05

I like them all well enough, except for Alvin, Lance, Irwin and Irvin.

My favourites from the list are Arnold, Felix & Robin.

roweeena · 29/10/2013 03:15

I like Arnold

HaveIGot · 29/10/2013 00:04

What about Julian as an alternative to Julius?

HaveIGot · 29/10/2013 00:03

Alvin ....no because I think of chipmunks Sad
Felix... Just about ok but I think of the cat
Baxter.... No because I think of soup Sad
Robin.... Just about ok
Julius nn Jules.... Ok
Irwin ..... No because I think Steve Irwin
Irvin ... No because it sounds odd
Lance... Ok
Arnold... No because i think of Schwarzenegger
Alexander but nn Lex not Alex or Xander .. Nice but very popular

Sorry, I have been a bit negative. Blush. I am a great believer in you choosing whatever name you and your DH like best.

I purposely haven't read the thread.

CarryOnDancing · 28/10/2013 23:14

No need to apologise fussychica-it's one way of helping me whittle down the list!
I really really do love Alexander but the popularity puts me off massively. Alex makes me think of a small person (in stature) so I don't like it as a nn. Whereas the full Alexander seems handsome and masculine?!
I like that it's a classic name, but Xander fits the current trend and the option of Lex gives it a less popular edge.

I'm quite surprised at the positivity towards Julius. I wish I could love it as much as DH as it would be job done! I really hope he looks like one, to solve the arguments!

I don't even know what I like anymore! Any other suggestions welcome!!

fussychica · 27/10/2013 18:55

Alexander is the only one for me from your list sorry OP.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 27/10/2013 14:38

Felix
Julius
Alexander

All nice Smile

I think Alexander is my favourite, but Julius is a close second and if I were looking for a less common name, it would pip Alexander.

Lubiloo · 27/10/2013 07:14

Love Julius and know a lovely 10 year old! Great name - classic, cool and not overused!

CarryOnDancing · 26/10/2013 23:09

Hahahaha, it's not a joke but I'm not easily offended Grin I wanted honesty!

Well you've helped us reduce the list slightly as now you've said about lancing a boil, I can't cope with Lance so it's officially removed.
I actually much prefer Laurence but DH says no...because a guy who happened to be called Laurence stole his cheese out of the fridge at work. So now he's emotionally scared by the name because he had nothing to too his pasta! Angry

Any more opinions on the names I actually like Hmm ? Well actually Irwin is DH's choice and he's gunning for Julius. I would only use the nn Jules I think.

Littlecherublegs · 26/10/2013 22:54

Favourite is Alexander though not keen on Lex.
Felix is ok.
Don't like the others esp Lance & Robin - both seem wet to me.

happy2help · 26/10/2013 22:51

Alexander is also lovely (back-peddling, frantically). I'm off to jump in the whole I've just dug for myself!

happy2help · 26/10/2013 22:50

Oh shit, sorry OP - perhaps it wasn't. Very sorry x Blush Thanks
