Just that really. Expecting DS1 and thinking of Casper, but want to explore other / more Scandinavian options.

What do you think of Sven? Is Thor too odd?

Or how about Gustav?

Vesa

13loki · 21/10/2013 17:56

And yet Loki is not uncommon. Although admittedly more commonly spelt Loke. Anyway, I forgot Hannes, Hans, Håkan, Björn, Åke (although that I only know from compound names.

FruitbatAuntie · 21/10/2013 17:23

My DS has both Soren and Lief as middle names and he is only one, def not just for over 60s!

BlessedAssurance · 21/10/2013 17:19

Kjetil is pronounced Chetil

BlessedAssurance · 21/10/2013 17:18

I have a lot of names, from my family=Johan, Jørgen, Ole, Jan Erik, Jan Arne, Vidar, Esben, Joachim, Andreas, Magnus, Tormod, Jarle, Ulf, Tore, Kjell and Kjetil pronounced Chell and Chesil, i would give you the names of my workmates but have to go. Will come back with more.

Ooh Stig: very cool.

For some reason Jussi makes me think of a dog but I think that's watching too much Wallander on tv...

I have worked with a Jussi, Tovoi (Topi), Timo who were all Finns.

Loki is not really the kind of half god you would want to name a child after!

Isnt carsten German? Means Christian anyway so ?Kristian

I'd go Kaspar/Caspar, Kristian, Arlo, Jens, Ole/Olle, Konstantin, Jesper, Rune, Thorsten and would've loved Loki as a middle but all the boys in our family get Somer/Zomer for some reason. Confused

FWIW, the last Scandi named boy I met was called Atli

bionic77 · 21/10/2013 15:04

Love Stellan or Carsten.

Cremolafoam · 21/10/2013 15:01

Has nobody said Stig?

addenuf · 21/10/2013 12:49

Frederic, Henning, Krister, Sverrir, Jonas - I love Wallender

bsc · 21/10/2013 11:31

merrylegs I think we were separated at birth!
Magnus and Espen my absolute favourite boys names!

I like MT too! [Grin]

roguepixie · 21/10/2013 11:24

Thys? Think it is Dutch in origin but appears as a Scaninavian name too.

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 11:16

Yes Rhubarb I think you're right and pronunciation differences are unavoidable. DD's name is Dutch and although the Swedish and English broadly get it right they sometimes go a bit off-piste and it doesn't really bother me (or her, but then she's 14 months!)

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 11:04

Oh and my attempt at the Dutch pronunciation:

Ggghhhuuustaaaaf

Haha. So gurgling followed by long vowels.

We are Anglo-Dutch. So when we are over in Holland, my Gus gets the, er, sneeze pronunciation. I don't think you can avoid differences in pronunciation. Both my kids cope fine with their names being pronounced differently by different family members. After all, there are even differences within the UK - my Yorkshire family's good solid 'Gus' is very different from the almost 'Gas' he gets down here in the south east.

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 11:00

Goose is a very cute nickname! I love it!

Quite like Axel - will put on list.

OP posts:
RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 10:57

LOL, is it sort of 'Hjustaf'?

BurberryQ · 21/10/2013 10:56

how about Axel?

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 10:54

We are a Swedish / Dutch family (outs self) and most of these names work in all languages, although pronunciation is an issue.

Linus would be Leenus, Linnus or Lienus depending on the language. And I don't even want to try and spell how you pronounce Gustav (Guus) in Dutch but it involves lots of gurgling!

OP posts:
Rhubarbgarden · 21/10/2013 10:34

We do also call him Gussy, I must admit. Probably more than Gustav. Will probably drop it as he gets older - can't imagine a teenage boy called Gussy!

bundaberg · 21/10/2013 09:38

We pronounce it lie-nus (like in snoopy) but I know that isn't the correct Scandinavian pronunciation!

I think it should be linn-us (short I rather than e sound)
