My daughter was nearly Martha thanks to Tom Waits.

What songs have or could inspire you to name a baby after them?

How about Ana, Allison, Surfer Rosa, Cecilia Ann or Alec Eiffel - The Pixies
or Gloria, Saint Dominic's Preview, Jackie Wilson Said, Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison

Layla-Eric Clapton.

Adore the name but is the name of my ex so OH vetoed it!

Quangle · 18/10/2013 16:47

Cecilia. I have one inspired by the song.

YY to Judy and the Dream of Horses. I adore that song.

I often say that DS1 was nearly called Roscoe or Christabel (Midlake and Joan As Policewoman respectively!)

If DS2 had been a girl he would have been Rosa or Mary - Mary because it is a good Springsteen name and Rosa for the same reasons and I'd be too chicken to use Rosalita.

Yes, Polly is a great song but not sure I would name my daughter after it!

MoominMammasHandbag · 18/10/2013 15:30

But do people actually listen to the lyrics?
Lola?
Polly?
Shakes head in disbelief.

charleslingus · 18/10/2013 13:10

Yes, 'alright Ange' doesn't quite evoke the finer nuances of that song.

Unfortunately if you wrote the right song about 'Brian' crooned by a skinny legged cool as fuck rock star, it can be easily romanticised!

I think the ones that conjure up the song straight away for me are short and snappy, like ruby, Lola, penny and Martha (plus the songs are massive and less obscure)
Though saying that I've probably liked the name Polly because of nirvana and what it conjures up for me, but in reality the first thing most people would think of is Pollyanna, which is not what I would want.

adaloveslace · 18/10/2013 12:42

charleslingus Angie by the Rolling Stones is my favourite song of all time. I would have been sorely tempted, except that everyone would have called her 'Angie' instead of sexily drawling out 'Aaaiiingie' in the fashion of Mick Jagger.

My dd is also a Foo Fighters song, although she wasn't named after it (or the fecking Disney princess).

I love the name Judy purely because of the Belle and Sebastian song 'Judy and the dream of horses'.

weebarra · 18/10/2013 11:34

My sis is named after a Bob Dylan song, Visions of Johanna. My name is in there too!

absentmindeddooooodles · 18/10/2013 11:30

My ds is jude......inspiration from the beatles song :)

I came very, very close to calling DD Ruby, with a middle name of Tuesday.

DH vetoed it. Boring bugger.

DS would have been Eloise if he'd been a girl. Because of the song.

Suzanne - from Fire and Rain by James Taylor

MoominMammasHandbag · 18/10/2013 11:01

Ha ha, when I was in hospital having DS1, the woman in the next bed told me she had named all three of her daughters after a place and a song. So Georgia, by Michael Bolton; Vienna by Ultravox and Chelsea..... by the Chelsea Football club[hmmm]
I am very horrid and could barely keep a straight face at that one.

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 18/10/2013 10:58

I loved Rio for a girl but the drink and footballer put me off.

Looking back I'm glad DS1 was a boy. I blame pregnancy hormones. Grin

kchapper5 · 18/10/2013 10:57

I'm named after a marrillion song from the 80's I quite like it and surprisingly less people know it than i would have thought

squoosh · 18/10/2013 10:55

So Long Marianne - Leonard Cohen
Carey - Joni Mitchell
Alison - Elvis Costello
Ballad of Ole Betsy - The Beach Boys
Michael - Franz Ferdinand
Tom Traubert's Blues - Tom Waits

And the trillions of ace songs with Johnny in the title!

NotYoMomma · 18/10/2013 10:53

Adrienne

GingerPCatt · 18/10/2013 10:51

Though I'm not named after a song there is a song that has my name. It's a bit disturbing when people I've just met sing about making love to me. Ugh no. It's a song from the 60's so hopefully not too many people remember it.
