...my friend is sort of Marry -ann - a (sort of a short a, e sound). Very beautiful person and beautiful name.

CarlaBrooni · 12/10/2013 17:44

One of my favourite friends (Danish) is Marianne. She's a beautiful person and the name suits her perfectly.

An added bonus is that I don't think it can be shortened. Wonderful.

daisydoo85 · 12/10/2013 17:39

Like "Marry Ann"
I would anyways

Cru Cru wait, you don't pronounce Marianne Mary Ann? How does one say it then?

daisydoo85 · 12/10/2013 17:34

Like Vivienne too. But Marianne still top choice
I don't worry too much about it being mispronounced as people do that with the simplest names, don't they?

Marianne was my number 1 name too, but DH also vetoed it. Because "people will think Mary-Ann or Maid Marian". Grrr.

Minty82 · 12/10/2013 12:19

Nadia - he thinks it's 'two names spliced together'. Which I guess technically it is, but a) I don't know why that's a bad thing, and b) it's been in use for centuries as a name in its own right and I think qualifies as "about as classic as it gets" by now! I got nowhere when DD was born though, and now we're expecting DC2 and I can't seem to get it anywhere near the list.
Funnily enough he does like Florence! Which I do like, but not enough to use myself. Sigh...

insancerre · 12/10/2013 09:18

love itit was on my shortlist for ds if he had been dd it is also a beauiful song by the sisters of mercy that we had as our first dance at our wedding in 1987 apologies or awfl post but im mning from my tv and i cant do paragrahs Grin

nooka · 12/10/2013 09:04

Another liker of Marianne. I like Vivian too which I think has a similar vibe. I don't like Florence at all though.

RustyBear · 12/10/2013 09:03

My niece is Marianne - I've never heard anyone in her family shorten it, but I'd guess her friends called her Maz when she was a teenager.

CruCru · 12/10/2013 08:59

I like this a lot, it was on our short list. Only thing that put me off was the idea of people pronouncing it Marian or Mary-Ann - no idea if that would happen though.

Really like Marianne and know a fab one. It is never shortened.

NadiaWadia · 12/10/2013 00:48

Lovely, classy name and still fairly unusual.

Minty what reasons did your DH give for vetoing it? He clearly has no taste (in names), so can't you just overrule him?

Tikkamasala · 12/10/2013 00:10

Really nice! Definitely a great balance of classic/heard off but unusual and rare. I also like Florence.

Thurlow · 11/10/2013 22:24

I don't like Florence, I find it quite a hard name and it doesn't have many shortenings that are nice either.

Marianne is just gorgeous though!

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2013 22:11

I adore Marianne, it's an underused classic.

ThoughtsPlease · 11/10/2013 22:10

I love the name Marianna.

My DDs have a friend called Marianna, and while I am very happy with my DDs names, I often have a pang of 'something' that I did not think of Marianna!

Jemimapuddleduk · 11/10/2013 22:06

I know a baby Marianne and she is gorgeous. V cool name- works for all ages and lots of lovely nicknames too.

FloraDance · 11/10/2013 21:57

Gorgeous...

willowstar · 11/10/2013 21:21

I knew two adult Mariannes, both in Aberdeen. Neither were shortened. Lovely name.

daisydoo85 · 11/10/2013 20:23

Do you adult ones or little ones?
