We had decided on Rufus Caspar.

It was perfect.

We knew no other child with the name,it creates the NN Ru which I adore (can't use rupert or Reuben either),it's not popular but not unknown,it has no terrible associations,it goes brilliantly with our other DC names, and it's cool dammit.

But now a sort-of-relative-family-friend has used it for her PFB,and it will look like we've copied and I know it's childish but I do care about that for some reason.

It's taken me months to settle on a name and now I have to start all over again

It's Not Fair!

I am such a trendsetter - my eldest is Theo. when we chose it everyone said how unusual it was - it was well outside the top 100.

My second son is Rufus - only 108 in the country in the year he was born - and now MN wisdom says its going to be 'common' Shock

My third son is Rory - that too was unusual when he was born but I know a few now!

Honestly, if you love a name, use it - imagine if no-one in the early 70s had thought they could use Sarah because it was too common (I have about 10 friends called Sarah from prep/early childhood!)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/10/2013 20:18

Stop being such a wet blanket and use it then. If you love it that much, you barely know this woman, you'd advise anyone in the same position to use it, so bloody use it. Get a grip woman!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 06/10/2013 20:15

When are you due? You might feel differently IMA month.

Merel · 06/10/2013 20:11

Rudolf?

JemR234 · 06/10/2013 20:09

Don't give up Rufus if you love it.

If I was you I would send the new parents a message now saying congrats and believe it or not Rufus is the name you've chosen for your little one, then make a joke about great minds think alike or something. Then it will look less like copying than if they just hear about the name when you announce it.

Presumably they are prepared for the fact that other people will name the child the same as their PFB!

RiaOverTheRainbow · 06/10/2013 20:05

Rubeus?

DitsyDonkey · 06/10/2013 20:02

Ezra...ra....roo? Is it a bit of a stretch?

happymostofthetime · 06/10/2013 20:02

Ruskin?

derektheladyhamster · 06/10/2013 19:59

Just use it, my cousin's dd has the same name as my sister's dd. We rarely see them and they don't live close by, so it makes no difference whatsoever.

TheArticFunky · 06/10/2013 19:59

You could always send the friend a card and congratulate her on her great taste in names and tell her that it's the name you have also chosen.

Rufus is not that unusual I know of two (although one is a dog).

It could be worse my friend gave her dog the same name as ds2

flowery · 06/10/2013 19:51

I think you might regret not using it tbh

Butwilliseeyouagain · 06/10/2013 19:51

To be honest with you, Rufus is the new Alfie and every second boy will be Rufus soon. Trust me.

Stereolab · 06/10/2013 19:50

Roux?

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 06/10/2013 19:50

Flowery I know,it's stupid,I only really have contact with her through FB and though our friends/relatives in common. I absolutely shouldn't care,
And I'd tell anyone in my position to use the name anyway. But for some reason,it just seems too close.

TheArticFunky · 06/10/2013 19:49

Or how about just going for Ru?

cece · 06/10/2013 19:49

Roosevelt

TheArticFunky · 06/10/2013 19:48
