What do you think of Elliot?

I like this name and am considering naming ds3, due Jan, Elliot. When I have mentioned this to some family members they pull a face while saying 'oh really? Er, that's nice'. What are they thinking that they haven't got the balls to say to a hormonal pregnant woman? Am I missing something?

i'm not keen on surnames as names. i also have a suspicion it might become the Brett of this generation, i know a few.

bananamummy · 03/10/2013 13:00

We know one who goes by El, which sounds like Elle so quite feminine.

HollyBen · 03/10/2013 07:13

I know 2 Elliot's. When I first heard it I was a bit unsure, but it has really grown on me. I think it's one of those names that you rarely hear outside of baby and toddler groups which makes people a bit [hmmm]. I do think it has become more popular of late if that concerns you

sonniboo · 03/10/2013 06:53

Nice name but the short forms El or Ellie sound a little feminine imo.

CordeliaRose · 02/10/2013 21:12

Elliot - I think it's fabulous!

wafflingworrier · 02/10/2013 20:53

I don't really like it, its a surname to me
but if you like it, ignore me!

Norfolknway · 02/10/2013 20:36

I love it.
I think it's a strong name. Unfortunately, DP doesn't like it :( back to the drawing board!

EugenesAxe · 02/10/2013 20:36

Watch the film 'The Sure Thing'. Personally, I'm a bit on the fence about it, although a good friend's son is Elliot and he's lovely, which helps.

Hah! squoosh beat me to it!

Alis- that's my theory exactly!

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/10/2013 18:46

I always think Elliot is a first name, Elliott is a surname and Eliot is plain wrong. But that's just me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/10/2013 18:45

I like it...for a boy. Knew one at school.

The only girl one I've ever come across was the doctor in scrubs and it was one of the initial gags really, dad wanted a boy, gave her the boys name even though she was a girl etc etc.

CleverOl10 · 02/10/2013 15:11

I ran it past my DH and he also likes it so it has moved to the top of our list for boys! Prefer the spelling Elliot.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 02/10/2013 09:36

Love Elliot, really love it.

laura0007 · 02/10/2013 09:35

Elliot will be my DSs middle name when he's born in feb Smile

harrygracejessica · 02/10/2013 09:26

I've got an Elliot, loved the name and luckily DH did too :-)

ch1134 · 01/10/2013 22:44

When I went to school we had these temporary classrooms, like portacabins, and they were always called 'the elliott huts'. I don't know why, but it makes me think of a run down school!

birdofthenorth · 01/10/2013 20:55

Love it. Know some adult and child ones. Has a lovely sound to it.

squoosh · 01/10/2013 16:50

I like the name Elliot but it always

Grin
Raahh · 01/10/2013 13:45

I have an Elliot -he's nearly 11. I still love it- very rarely come across another, (not that that bothers me), and no-one ever makes the E.T connection- or the Pete's Dragon connection eitherGrin.

And (because just seeing half the title, I was worried you were considering it for a girl)- I came on to make the same 'Scrubs' point Freedom made as I have on many Elliot threads over the years. Grin

There are at least 3 accepted spellings - Elliot, Elliott, Eliot though, which can sometimes pose a problem. The first one is rightWink.

juneau · 01/10/2013 12:31

I love it. I wanted to call DS1 Elliott, but DH didn't like it. I didn't manage to persuade him to call DS2 Elliott either Sad

FreedomOfTheTess · 01/10/2013 12:18

I love Elliot. For a boy only.

In the series Scrubs, Elliot does say in an early episode, her dad had wanted a boy and that's why she was given a boy's name. Scrubs never tried to suggest Elliot is a female name, in fact it's the opposite, and they made it clear it was a male name used on a girl!

Madamecastafiore · 01/10/2013 08:44

It's DS's middle name. Would have been his 1st name but rhymes with DDs name exactly and thought it sounded a bit silly having kids with rhyming names.

AnythingNotEverything · 01/10/2013 08:40

I'm not a fan, but mainly because where I live no one pronounces the final "t".

If you love it, then go for it.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 01/10/2013 08:34

Love it, suits all ages.
