Same initial for both children? Or too twee?

Hello

I have been asking friends' opinions on this so thought I would ask Mumsnet too... Would you give a second child of the same sex a name beginning with the same initial? Or is it too twee?

Eg
Toby and Tristan
Oliver and Oscar
Harry and Henry

etc, etc.

Opinions gratefully received!

Depends what it is but it wouldn't bother me

I wouldn't do Harry and Henry though as Harry comes from Henry, it is the nickname.

bumpyloopster · 20/09/2013 17:18

I wouldn't rule out a name just because it had the same initial, but would avoid one if there was also a similar sound in the name, say Jacob and Jamie but I think Jamie and John would be fine.

Cross post Grin.

My mum opened my post too even though our initials were different - must be a mum thing!

I'm sure my DDs will find lots of things to argue about as they grow older so at least that's one fight I know is coming!

How much post do you people get?!! Even growing up before the internet I never got tons of post, and I expect with emails etc teenagers get barely any now.

soontobeslendergirl · 20/09/2013 10:47

How much post do all you get?

OH and I have the same first initial and the boys have the same first initial as each other, but no confusion seems to occur.

We dont get Bank Statements or Utility Bills etc as these are all switched off and all accounts are managed on-line - including the boys who have internet banking.

Pretty much the only (non Junk) mail we recieve is Birthday cards etc....and we all have different birthdays and they aslo tend to have our full name on. Or if we have ordered something and then usually we would know who's it was without looking at the label even.

Genuinely curious as maybe I am missing something or it's all still to come.

honeybeeridiculous · 20/09/2013 10:05

Don't do it! In my experience it will cause years of arguments opening each others post! Plenty of other names out there without using same initials. Good luck!

soontobeslendergirl · 19/09/2013 22:08

Diddle - Craig & Ciar

Diddle82 · 19/09/2013 22:06

I would do it. Deffinately
Soontobe what are your dc's called?

SkodaLabia · 19/09/2013 17:20

Not that any baby has been called Jason in the past 40 years! Grin

SkodaLabia · 19/09/2013 17:20

For me it's too matchy matchy if it's the same sound eg Jason and Jacob.

soontobeslendergirl · 18/09/2013 23:18

my two have the same initial - not deliberate but not an issue either - great for passing stuff down - eldest gets first initial and then surname on the 2nd line, that leaves a space to write full name of youngest on when it's passed down so I don't get their stuff muddled up :)

Actually, youngest's 4 letter name is 4 of the letters of eldest's 5 letter name just re-arranged - we didn't notice that until I was ordering wooden letters to put on their bedroom doors when they were about 4 and 3 :o

TwoTearsInABucket · 18/09/2013 22:16

My two have the same initial, but not on purpose, just cos I liked the names. Dc3 won't necessarily have the same initial.
When I refer to the two of them together I call them the Zs (not their initial!)

AuntieBrenda · 18/09/2013 22:13

All of us in my family had exactly the same initials. All four of us. It was never an issue. Not once. I didn't honestly think about it at all until I got married and changed my last name.

WigglyBraddins · 18/09/2013 22:12

DH is an R, I am an R, DS is an R. If the next DC is a girl, she'll be an R. If the next DC is a boy we're going to struggle to find an R name and I'm genuinely worried that if they don't have one they'll feel left out.

There are also practical advantages: we can all pay in each others cheques & have on occasions opened each others post.

I love it & if you love it too, go for it xxx

JimmyCorkhill · 18/09/2013 22:09

Ha ha - well I was hoping DD2 would be twins so that I could dress them the same so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask Grin.

OpenMindedSceptic · 18/09/2013 22:05

Although if DD was a boy it would be the same initial too ( again, we liked the name!)

OpenMindedSceptic · 18/09/2013 22:02

Sorry just re-read your post - same sex children. Ignore my post Grin

OpenMindedSceptic · 18/09/2013 22:00

My DS and DD have the same first initial. It was not deliberate - we just liked the names.

dietcokeandwine · 18/09/2013 21:49

The post issue wouldn't bother me but I would never have done the 'same initial' thing simply because I find it too twee and a bit naff. Sorry.

peachmint · 18/09/2013 21:23

I think it's too twee personally.

daughterofafarmer · 18/09/2013 21:19

My BIL is 1 of 5 and all 4 boys have the same initias....

They seem ok, no long term issues Grin

JimmyCorkhill · 18/09/2013 21:14

I've done it! Not a prob so far. I also kept to the same amount of letters!!! Think of the £££££ you will save on name labels (thrifty emoticon).

SmokedMackerel · 18/09/2013 21:12

I would avoid it - I sometimes call mine by each others names anyway, so if they had the same initial I bet I would be constantly saying the wrong one. Sil has the same initial as dd 2 and whenever I am with them both I address sil as dd and vice versa constantly. I expect sil feels like strangling me after a day out Blush.
So, if you are a dozy mare like me don't do it!

BackforGood · 18/09/2013 21:07

It was one of the things I certainly wanted to avoid, and am glad I did - there's loads of times you use dc's initials, not just on post - just makes life a lot easier if they are different
