Ezra for a girl?

Does this work as a first name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Ham69 · 17/09/2013 20:38

Where are you op?
Ezra for a girl, no.
Esther or Esme for a girl, yes.

TravailsInHyperreality · 17/09/2013 20:05

Why not use Esme or Eliza?

Both gorgeous. And good for a girl.

I do know a female Jeffery. . She was named after her dad. Still didn't make it any better...

Well, as some posters have quite rudely firmly pointed out, it is traditionally a boys name. However, it ends with 'a' which you could argue (and many, many do on MN name threads) that this sounds feminine. As Spacebar says above, lots of names are adapted/adopted for the opposite gender, so why not this. Also, I once met a female Ezra. I knew it was a boys name but when she first introduced herself my first thought was "wow, that is such a cool name for a girl". Different strokes for different folks.

3littlebadgers · 17/09/2013 17:28

Esra pronounced Ezra is a turkish girls name. I know a few girls and women with the name Esra, they are very beautiful, clever, funny and popular. I love it.

thistlelicker · 17/09/2013 17:15

Op didn't come back

MissHC · 17/09/2013 17:12

Same as Bakingtins, I know an Esra, who's Turkish. With an s it looks less boyish I think.

jalapeno · 17/09/2013 17:12

No it doesn't work at all for a girl!!

Might stick it on my boys list though...

RussiansOnTheSpree · 17/09/2013 17:09

Ezri can be a girl's name now. Deep Space 9 made it ok. Grin

Although if I was choosing a Dax to name my female child after I'd go for Emenie or Jadzia.

curlew · 17/09/2013 17:06

Or how about an actual girl's name?

AnotherStitchInTime · 17/09/2013 16:57

How about Ezri? Still originally a Hebrew boys name, but sounds more feminine.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/09/2013 16:51

Badlad you have my kid of humour :o Love Bottom too.

nightcircus · 17/09/2013 15:11

I've met a female Ezra! Brothers were Oliver and Jenson.

BadLad · 17/09/2013 14:59

Wasn't Nursie in Blackadder called Bernard?

Yep. And Eddie in Bottom had the full name Edward Elizabeth Hitler.

BlackMogul · 17/09/2013 14:32

Try Esme. Girls name and has a similar ring to it.

LeoandBoosmum · 17/09/2013 14:27

I LOVE Black Adder :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/09/2013 14:26

And then Sir Thomas More pointed out that a boy without a winkle is a girl, and everyone was really disappointed.

There's one for the gender disappointment threads!

Bakingtins · 17/09/2013 14:22

My SIL is Esra, but she is Turkish. I've never come across another girl with the name, and would assume Ezra was a boy.

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 17/09/2013 14:17

She wasn't wrong.

LeGavrOrf · 17/09/2013 14:14

Haha at Bernard,Donald, Eric and Basil.

I love nurse.

"It's a boy without a winkle. Praise be it's a miracle!"

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 17/09/2013 14:04

I plan to have a girl named Basil.

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 17/09/2013 14:04

Meredith can still be a boys' name - it's not common, but in Wales you sometimes get it. Meredydd Hughes (high-up cop who got caught speeding), for example.

MrsOakenshield · 17/09/2013 13:54

I didn't know that about Meredith. I know Hilary and Evelyn are boys' names though I still think they sound daft as boys' names.

Tell me, am I right with my apostrophe? Looks wrong with and wrong without, but I'm sure it should be there.

MadBusLady · 17/09/2013 13:52

Grin And her sisters were called Donald, Eric and Basil.
