Love both, also love the nicknames Ace and Ru that may or may not stick Wink

We can't decide on an order though,so to a MN poll...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 09/09/2013 19:29

Yeah,I did think about it Zola I had a thread about it yesterday Grin
I've decided it doesn't actually bother me though,I don't think they're too similar.

And no,I don't like Acer, that's a brand of computer,I'd much rather my DS was confused with a girl than an inanimate object.
DP feels much the same way and he's a Male who's actually got an actual girls name,so I reckon he's probably the authority on it.

And. I DON'T CARE IF YOU THINK IT'S FEMININE,THAT'S NOT WHAT I ASKED

The Swedish name is pronounced differently, has a funny A that my ipad cant even do,has a different meaning and is,umm, Swedish. So its not exactly like calling him Sue.

Is Asa pronounced Acer?
I think Rufus Asa flows better but I really, really love Asa as a first name.

SubliminalMassaging · 09/09/2013 19:26

I like them both, particularly Rufus but I don't think the go well together at all - too clunky and busy.

Asa is a really strong, quite out there name, and it needs to stand alone as a first name I think. If you pick it as a middle name it will just look like you didn't have the courage of your convictions.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2013 19:24

Not fond of alliterative sibling names either.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2013 19:23

I prefer Asa. Don't think either combo 'flows' very well though, if I'm honest. Rufus Asa is particularly 'bad' because there's nothing to break the flow between the separate sounds so they blend together instead. Asa Rufus is better, but not great imho.

DoItTooJulia · 09/09/2013 19:20

They would be the A team!

ZolaBuddleia · 09/09/2013 19:11

Sorry, not explaining this at all well. Blush

I meant that Asa and Arlo have the same initial, and are very much the same type of name. Like Philip and Peter. If you only had the two of them it would be matchy matchy.

bundaberg · 09/09/2013 18:58

actually, you know what? My Asa is rather fond of his sparkly twinkle toes shoes. And he does own several dresses.

maybe it IS too feminine a name? Shock

SoupDragon · 09/09/2013 18:56

Does it matter that Asa is quite close to one of your other son's names?

Doesn't it simply begin with the same letter? Confused how is that similar?

SoupDragon · 09/09/2013 18:53

Rufus Asa doesn't flow well at all, the S sounds are too close together and, with Asa beginning with a vowel, it just ends up as a single sounding mess IMO.

Don't you think it sounds too feminine though [snigger]

bundaberg · 09/09/2013 18:51

Ã…sa is a girls name. It's written and pronounced very differently.

Asa is a hebrew boys name.

FairyPenguin · 09/09/2013 18:51

Asa Rufus sounds better. Asa is a great name, I have a fantastic male friend called Asa.

ZolaBuddleia · 09/09/2013 18:48

But Acer is a computer or a tree.

ZolaBuddleia · 09/09/2013 18:47

I love Asa. For me Asa Rufus flows better.

Does it matter that Asa is quite close to one of your other son's names? Not the same sound, but the same initial and cut from the same cloth, IYSWIM?

Saffyz · 09/09/2013 18:39

Asa isn't a girls name.

It's a Scandinavian girls name meaning "goddess". I've learned on this thread that it's also a boys name.

OP, would you consider Acer? Then you won't get the inevitable "girls name" conversations which I'm sure will not be limited to MN...

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 09/09/2013 17:17

Asa

It's not in the least feminine - I don't see that at all.
It's my 2nd Favourite name. Wish I'd stuck to my guns for DS2

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 09/09/2013 17:16

Well,it's at least confirmed to me that I like the name enough to defend it Grin

pygmy · 09/09/2013 16:07

I don't think Asa sounds particularly girly, but it does strike me as the sort of name that a celeb might choose.

bundaberg · 09/09/2013 16:03

lol. it's painful isn't it?

i asked a similar thing a few years ago and got told that both my choices sounded "wanky" (among other insults)
i hasten to add that i hadn't asked for opinions on the names, just which went better.

fwiw no-one has ever called my Asa ASS-a (he's 4.5 now)

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 09/09/2013 15:28

we do not care if you think it looks or sounds feminine

It is a boys name...DP has what is essentially a girls name and it has never ever been a problem.

I was only asking which way round they flowed better.

OP posts:
LeoandBoosmum · 09/09/2013 15:04

Just Rufus or Rufus with another middle name.

hellokitty123 · 09/09/2013 14:57

But I do agree that Rufus Asa doesn't flow that well and the other way round sounds better.

hellokitty123 · 09/09/2013 14:55

To me, Asa sounds/looks very feminine. I think it is the fact that it ends with an 'a'. I'd also worry about people mis pronouncing it as ASS-a.

Bowlersarm · 09/09/2013 12:55

Rufus Asa

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 09/09/2013 12:54

I wouldn't care anyway,as I said its a non issue for us.

I was more interested in which order it flowed better...
