Suggestions for "Grandad" style name?

DC2 is due at the beginning of December.

If it's a girl she will probably be Mary Harriet, if it's a boy we are currently stuck !

We already have a Poppy Arabella and absolutely love Arthur but it sounds stupid with our surname.

I am trying to persuade DH on Walter but he is wavering to and from it.

I like Ted as a nn but Edward is just okay.

Bill.

DS has a 'grandad' name. It seemed too old for him when he was tiny, but they grow into them.

A baby Bernard would be adorable.

Harold

Thomas is an overlooked classic I think

Some good suggestions on her thank you.

I don't want to use one of our Grandads names as I would prefer some new within the Family (iykwim).

We can't use Alf as that's the cat Grin

Did laugh at Malcolm and Geoffrey, yes that probably is a mn step too far ! :)

DH has now suggested Monty, not sure if this should be the name of a cat though.

I do like Otto, not sure what I think of Theodore (which would give us Ted as a nn). Herbert and Hector and Gilbert are going on the list thank you.

Bruce makes me think of the Kardashians and Basil makes me think of faulty towers unfortunately Grin

Percy
Ernest

SadPander · 07/09/2013 18:56

Stanley, Arthur, George?

EnjoyEverySandwich · 07/09/2013 16:36

You rarely hear Ed- names shortened to Ned nowadays, do you? Sounds very old-fashioned to me. Wouldn't it more likely be Ed or Eddie, or Ted/Teddy which seems to be more fashionable now.

Tinlegs · 07/09/2013 16:20

My grandfathers were Maurice Edmund and Philip John. Quite like Maurice (pronounced Morris) but love Edmund and really wanted that one myself. Only problem is, shortening it to Ned which, in Scotland, means the same as Chav so, as I live in Scoltand, had to give it up!

StrawbRhi · 07/09/2013 16:16

My grandfathers were Henry (Harry) and Augustyn. Thinking about it, Augustyn is a bit lovely!

My father is George but the popularity will put most off, and my FIL is Bernard... Hmmm, Maybe not.

LindaMcCartneySausage · 07/09/2013 15:24

Hugh
Roger
Percy
Claude
Clement

LazyFaire · 07/09/2013 15:06

My Grandads' were Jay and Jim (James)

I love Jay although I expect it is my DBro's first choice. My Dad (now a Grandad) is called Graham (sounds seriously out of date at the mo, but you could start a trend?!)

Don't you want one of your own parents/grandparent's names?

PuppyMonkey · 07/09/2013 14:47

Grin at the thought of a baby called Malcolm, Gordon or Bernard. Maybe taking it a step too far there MN.

Kaekae · 07/09/2013 14:46

Bertie
Stanley
Barney
Gus
Jack
Seth
Ernie

MortifiedAdams · 07/09/2013 14:42

Arg was going to suggest Sid.

Lawrence?

Shapechanger · 07/09/2013 14:41

Wilfred, Ernest, Cecil, Cedric Ugh.

And Walter? Appalling and weedy. I feel your dh's pain.

Why do you want a stodgy old grandad name associated with pipe and slippers? I don't have a DS but I would want something that could at least be associated with some dynamism and masculinity.

Betty3boys · 07/09/2013 13:42

I love older generation names!
We have three boys all named after our grandparents; eldest middle name is Arthur.
Second son's first name is Alfred (Gets called Alfie, Fred and Ted)
Our youngest is Sidney (Sid)
Currently expecting number four and if it's another boy he will be Stanley after hubby's other grandad.
The 1911 census is currently free to view on some websites and is full of some fantastic inspiration for grandparent names :)
