Lilias. Masculine??

This is my all time favourite girls name, and I just wondered what people thought of it? My boyfriend thinks it sounds masculine I heartily disagree.

I'm sure I can win my boyfriend round. Although I don't want to do that compromise thing, where me getting a Lilias would mean that he could have a Frans. Or Gordon. I remember the Blanche thread...

It does remind me of Elias but not so much that I'd think it was a boy's name, no. The Lily part is too dominant for that.

It does sound a bit masculine to me because I can only think of boys names with 'ias' sounding endings (41 come up on Beyond The name compared to 3 girls names, including Lilias/Lillias). If you live in Scotland where is is recognised as being just right for a girl then I can't imagine that would be a problem.

Lily and it's many variants is very popular right now.

I think it's pretty. It does remind me of that line in Pretty Fly for a White Guy about 'kick his lily ass'. Eminent also talks about his lily-white ass. I think I'm probably in the minority though :)

I actually like girls' names that end in -s. It's not too frilly and I like that.

I knew several girls called Lilias (in Scotland) when I was growing up in the 50s/60s although I don't know any young ones.

It doesn't sound anything like Lily Ass, so fear not, OP. I'm sure people would be able to pronounce it properly once they'd heard it.

Apart from Dorcas, I can only think of boys names ending in "as" such as Silas, Elias, Judas, Lucas, Matthias.

But if you like it, then why not? People get used to unusual names soon enough.

Elias, yes, thats what I was thinking too. And Lucas. If I saw Lilias written down I would think it was a boy with a rather feminine name, if that makes sense.

I think it sounds masculine, like Elias.

But if you really like it then it shouldn't matter what other people think.

I don't give a toss what people think of names I like really, always interested in opinions, unlikely to heed them.

It was a novella, come to think of it. Light My Fire by Jane Stephenson. Black comedy about a Scottish architect who leaves his wife (the well-born Lilias) for an oil wife and gets his come-uppance.

Very pretty. Didn't know it was Scottish form of Lilian, though, come to think of it, its the name of a very posh Scottish character in a novel i read recently. Not remotely masculine.

Of course it is. Whether it's learning to stand up for yourself in the playground, or finding a response to the tiresome old uncle or neighbour who constantly sings an irritating song about your name. There are various ways of dealing with these things - humour is one and it's a great lesson to learn.

Hmm,not sure if I agree about teasing being character building! But children will certainly pick up on anything, agreed - Lily-ass or not :p

If kids want to tease, they'll find something.

I think people make too much of a big deal about teasing anyway. Children need to learn to deal with teasing. It's character-building.
