Rory or Albert

Eek! Baby son due in exactly a month and DH has thrown a name curveball.

I've always had Albert in mind (since before conception even Blush ) as we live abroad and it is pronounceable and recognisable in most countries, easy to shorten (we would call him Bertie) and in our opinion it, or one of its nicknames, fits with all the jobs etc. I like old lady/man names. I've been talking to the bump using this name when no one is watching so it seems hard to think of anything else now.

We heard the name Rory on the radio last night with DH has declared he loves more than Albert, the meaning is "red king" and DH is a redhead which might be something to do with it! I also love Rory but am not sure it sounds a bit cutesy for an adult (although I know adult Rory's) or nicknamey and will not be so easy to pronounce here although hoping to move back to the uk in a couple of years...

Both suit the surnames (using my maiden name as middle name). Just wondering if you could give some feedback on these for me to take mp back to DH (and please don't suggest others as its bad enough having one additional name spanner in the works!)

I know brothers who are Bertie and Rory (there is a third brother as well, but I had better not say his name to preserve my anonymity!)

Thanks so much for all your feedback. DH tried Rory out on his local workmates and their reaction said a lot I think. They just couldn't say it properly and fell about laughing apparently! I still love the name but my gut says Albert, so we've reserved Rory as a name for a future son if we move back to the uk! I think Bertie and Rory go v well together for brothers' names too!!

Neither is a favourite for me, but I would avoid Rory as it can be difficult to say. Even among native English speakers, there are many people who have trouble with R's, and the double dose in Rory is a killer.

Albert has a good range of nn's too, which gives him some options as he grows up.

Rory!!! I have a 12 week old Rory and he is just amazing.

Had non stop compliments on his name too- lots of people saying its the ideal mix of not too popular at all but not so out there either!

I also have a Rory, and I love it. It's strong and simple. Not so keen on Albert.

It's my dad's name and is on our shortlist too. I love Bertie as well.

I prefer Albert - it sounds lovely, and is more classical. The nickname Albie is cute!

I'd pick Rory, (the ones I've known have been fit and hot!) Rufus is another "Red King" name

Albert is a good solid useful name though, with lots going for it in Europe ATM, and I like Bertie too.

Difficult decision Umlauf.

I like Rory - I think is is a very strong name. But the problems with pronunciation would put me right off.

I think you get the final say. You're the one giving birth.

Rory for sure! Much more 'manly' name to me. Aside from Rory Underwood, the other Rory's I know IRL are a Royal Marine and another (non famous) rugby player, so it brings those types to mind. Also sounds like a lion (roar-ie) :D
Albert is not a strong name to me. Just makes me think of foppish early 1900s youths, Queen Victoria's husband and unpleasant piercings.

Thanks!! I'll have to let you know in a month, it might just be getting used to it, Dh has been chanting it with a massive grin on his face, but he may go off it (I love names for a day and then dislike them immediately afterwards!)

There you go then, OP, it is mean to be.

What a great name - evokes images of a great sportsman, and wasn't he academic as well? He is probably the first Rory I ever came across, and as a result, tend to think of Rory's as being dark.

If you've only recently thought of Rory, maybe it will take some getting used to and saying it out loud for a month before you decide.

Good luck with choosing. You can't go wrong with either, really.

bowlers Rory underwood started my interest in the name! My family are massive tigers fans and when I was 8 or so I went to his leaving party and still have the photo I have with him! He tried to teach me how to kick the ball over the posts!!! Totally of interest :-) and I had a cuddly tiger called Rory named after the underwood.

Dhs argument is we probably won't stay living here!

I really like Rory (it was on our list for a while) but if your family and most people in the country where your child will be raised can't pronounce it then Albert/Bertie seems like a better choice to me.

Much prefer it. This was on our list, although we ended up not choosing it.

Rory Underwood, rugby player, was around when I was growing up. I think his mother was from Malaysia.

(That may be no interest to anyway apart from me!)

I suggested Aurora early on with Rory as a nn for a girl but DH said it was hard to say and dismissed it, so it was a surprise when he brought it up.

if I like Bertie:Rory say, 6:4 and DH likes Bertie to Rory about 3:7, who gets the final choice? Do I have pushing rights!?
