Hi everyone,

I hope this will be my last thread on girls names! I have finally narrowed down our shortlist and Imogen is one of two remaining names. I recently read on MN that its becoming a name that will get very popular and common in the worst sense of the word. I'm not trying to be controversial saying that, I personally don't know anybody called Imogen.

What do you think? If you like it or dislike it, can you please also say what other type of names you like or dislike as when I read the name threads on MN, I always wonder if the name being debated is the issue or is it that the debaters don't like the particular type of name?

Thanks to everyone in advance again!

I teach lots of Imogens. It's a very popular name in the 11-14 age range. Not met so many over 14 that I can think of. Don't know about littlies.

Very pretty name though.

shez29 · 30/08/2013 20:37

Love it :)

looki · 29/08/2013 22:19

I prefer the word "popular" than "common" Its a nice name, if you like it then it really does not matter what anybody else thinks.. I think you do however care what other people think otherwise you wouldn?t be asking strangers their opinion on a name? But really if you like it that is all that counts! smile xx

I really meant the word 'common' I'm afraid. I read two things on Mumsnet that concern me, one that it is now popular among a certain less desirable contingent of society and although this shouldn't bother me, it is bothering me :(

The second thing I read was from an old post in 2008 which said that three names would become very popular. The names were Isabelle, Imogen and Isla. Well two of the three of them (Isabelle and Isla) are very very popular around here so I'm afraid that Imogen will go the same way and there will four in every class and the name will become so commonplace that my DD will have to be known by her name and surname and that bothers me a lot

However I like the name and have done so for a long time. I wanted it for DD1 and DH didn't like it. This time its his favourite name?!?!

Squosh, yes it is !
We have actually called the cat Idgie and she suits the name Wink

ClartyCarol · 29/08/2013 15:41

GrandstandingBlueTit -so you're an Isobel then? Wink

I do quite like Imogen, only know one, age 5.

What about Ingrid?

FriskyMare · 29/08/2013 15:37

I know 4 4y.o Imogens.

squoosh · 29/08/2013 15:30

Would that be Fried Green Tomatoes curlyclaz?

QueenofallIsee · 29/08/2013 15:22

I like it, I know 4 though so it is popular. One of them goes by 'Immy' which I don't like

Abbicob · 29/08/2013 15:18

I used to think it was classy but it has become a bit too popular now and hate the nickname Immy

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/08/2013 15:13

I like it.

It's classy without being too prissy or posh.

The child I know is sometimes called Immi

curlyclaz13 · 29/08/2013 15:08

It was on our girl list, nn idgie from my favourite book & film.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 29/08/2013 10:57

I don't like it, I find it clunky and plain.

Which is odd, I suppose, as written down, it's very similar to my own name (the I, o and e are in the same place, they have the same number of letters, and the remaining ones are all consonants as well).

Having said that, I don't really love my own name either (which is currently also yawnsome-ly popular and 'done').

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 29/08/2013 10:28

I love the name Imogen, and if I were to have another girl it is top of my name list.

Diddle82 · 28/08/2013 22:31

I know a 3yo Imogen who is know as Immy. Cute name.

CinnamonAddict · 28/08/2013 18:12

I love the name. Know 2 Imogens, both 12.
One is called Imy, I like that too.

TheCountessOlenska · 28/08/2013 18:07

I've got one! Grin She's Ginny for short. Not mega popular where I am but there is one other in her pre-school class.

looki · 28/08/2013 17:40

Oops pressed something in error there!

.....like it to.....?
Is that nonsense or indeed the case?

Yes it seems to be popular which I don't mind as long as its outside the top twenty really. I read on another thread that its now seen as a common name (common in not a nice way ie Katie Hopkins anti name list type of thing). I don't know anyone with this name and would also think its a middle of the road classless name but that comment bothers me more than I'd l

Imogen is number 37 in the top 100 baby names 2013 - have a look if you dont believe me :/ I like it.. my god daughter (who is 6) is called Imogen...

cerealandtoast · 28/08/2013 16:53

I think it's a lovely name.

It is a name that is/has always been well known, and perennially faintly popular - there's always one or two within every few years at school, but never loads, iyswim.

I prefer Imo to Immy, and Ginny is better than either.

MoonHare · 28/08/2013 16:49

I love it. I know one who is 5yrs old and she's a great little girl.

NadiaWadia · 28/08/2013 15:48

It's lovely. Classy too.

TripleRock · 28/08/2013 14:36

I know one. I do consider it to be a popular, middle of the road name, which is a minus point for my personal taste.

I don't dislike it though, it's a lovely name. Do dislike 'immy' though.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 28/08/2013 14:32

I really love it. Sadly it makes me think of Imogen Thomas though, that tarty girl from big brother who had the fling with Giggs.
