What do you think? Pronounced as La-oo-ra

Me too. Not massively Sam- u- ELL, but certainly not Sam-yule.

tywysogesgymraeg · 26/08/2013 23:43

I've never heard of Sam-yule either. Always Sam-u-el.

curlew · 26/08/2013 23:42

In Spanish it's spelled Laura and pronounced Laow-ra. If you're Spanish that's fine. If you're not, then it's plain bonkers and just setting the poor brat up for a lifetime of correcting people.

PurpleGirly · 26/08/2013 23:41

Round here it's Sam- you- el have never heard samyule.

OP what everyone else says.

goforthejobular · 26/08/2013 23:37

I like it. Pronounced Low-ra. But then I do like Borgen Grin

littlemog · 26/08/2013 23:35

Gosh OP no. It's not good.

Anjou · 26/08/2013 22:14

In theory it should be a pretty name but I agree with other posters that it'll be a real headache to keep explaining its pronunciation.

Had a girl been called this when I was at school the cruel/creative kids would've called her Danny Laoura. This joke is probably lost on anyone under the age of 38.

BOF · 26/08/2013 21:37

It's not pronounced La-oo-ra, more like Low(as in cow)-ra.

Just use Laura and pronounce it the Spanish way. Do you have any Spanish heritage?

difficultpickle · 26/08/2013 21:34

When ds was a baby we went to a class where another child was named Samuel. I asked the mum if he was a Sam or Samuel and pronounced Samuel in the usual (at least round here) way of Sam-yule. She corrected me and said no it is pronounced Sam-you-ell. I thought then I wonder how many times a day he would have to correct the pronounciation of his own name. Just such a tedious thing to inflict on a child.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 26/08/2013 21:24

I actually snorted at this. Come on!

Allalonenow · 26/08/2013 18:18

Laura is a beautiful name, please don't mangle it with added ooos or hhh, it's lovely just as it is.

Gooseysgirl · 26/08/2013 17:56

ON paper

Gooseysgirl · 26/08/2013 17:55

It looks like a typo in paper... Sorry, am not keen on the name

CockyFox · 26/08/2013 17:52

It looks daft and sounds very daft if you pronounce an oo.
I like Lowri though, could you go for that if you want the sound.

LookingForwardToVino · 26/08/2013 17:45

That's not a name!

You just put an 'o' in a real name didn't you Wink

CaptainJamesTKirk · 26/08/2013 17:44

Yes so exactly the same as Italian then... I was pretty sure it wasn't Laoora.

When I see Laoora I think...
La-Oora, La-Oora, La-Oora, La-Oora aayyyyyyy. Come on Eileen!

Snatchoo · 26/08/2013 17:37

Yes it's pronounced Lowra like ow not low in Spanish. The Spanish don't separate their syllables quite so much!

And it's vile. Lora is a real spelling. I like Luisa as well, has a harder S than Louisa which is more of a Z sound (if you are after a Spanishy name).

That is not the Spanish pronunciation...

Floggingmolly · 26/08/2013 17:34
Hmm
Capitola · 26/08/2013 17:29

It's horrid and looks mangled written down.

I have an Italian friend Laura, which is pronounced 'Loura'. But English people automatically pronounce it Laura.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 26/08/2013 17:26

You could always go for Lowri (nice welsh girls name).

LittleBearPad · 26/08/2013 17:24

Captain is right about the pronunciation in Spanish. There are two syllables only.

OrangeLily · 26/08/2013 17:22

She will forever get an eyebrow raise and folk spelling and saying it wrong. Also feels strange on my tongue.
