In Spanish it's spelled Laura and pronounced Laow-ra. If you're Spanish that's fine. If you're not, then it's plain bonkers and just setting the poor brat up for a lifetime of correcting people.

In theory it should be a pretty name but I agree with other posters that it'll be a real headache to keep explaining its pronunciation.

Had a girl been called this when I was at school the cruel/creative kids would've called her Danny Laoura. This joke is probably lost on anyone under the age of 38.

It's not pronounced La-oo-ra, more like Low(as in cow)-ra.

Just use Laura and pronounce it the Spanish way. Do you have any Spanish heritage?

When ds was a baby we went to a class where another child was named Samuel. I asked the mum if he was a Sam or Samuel and pronounced Samuel in the usual (at least round here) way of Sam-yule. She corrected me and said no it is pronounced Sam-you-ell. I thought then I wonder how many times a day he would have to correct the pronounciation of his own name. Just such a tedious thing to inflict on a child.

It looks daft and sounds very daft if you pronounce an oo.
I like Lowri though, could you go for that if you want the sound.

Yes so exactly the same as Italian then... I was pretty sure it wasn't Laoora.

Yes it's pronounced Lowra like ow not low in Spanish. The Spanish don't separate their syllables quite so much!

And it's vile. Lora is a real spelling. I like Luisa as well, has a harder S than Louisa which is more of a Z sound (if you are after a Spanishy name).

I have an Italian friend Laura, which is pronounced 'Loura'. But English people automatically pronounce it Laura.

She will forever get an eyebrow raise and folk spelling and saying it wrong. Also feels strange on my tongue.
