We have a Nicholas. Was always called by his full name until very recently - he's 22 now.

We have a nicholas, he gets his full name but his siblings call him nico.
we always get comments on what a lovely traditional proper it is.

Agree with wantmoresleep, we have a 10 year old Nicholas. He's the only one in his school and he won't accept a shortened version (Nick/Nico) It's a lovely name and very much under-used these days. I say go for it, it will not date!

I love Nicholas, it was up at the top of my list for boy's names, but a cousin's soon-to-be-born son (1 week overdue, tenterhooks!) is going to be a Niklas so I now have struck it off my list :(

We've decided that if dc2 (currently 21 weeks pg) is a boy he'll be called Nicholas.

Like with our dd's name, we want a name that isn't unusual and everyone has heard of but not everyone is called and Nicholas really fits that for us Smile

I don't think you'll regret it OP. All the teenage boys called Nicholas I know-friends of my three DSes (admittedly all called Nick) are really cool, nice lads. I have a soft spot for the name because of them.

Richard not an option as a first name, only as a middle name, as it is the name of a close family member and would get confusing, though I do love it. It is also the name of DH's (long dead and much missed) dad, so it is a cert as a middle name to remember him, rather than after the still living close family member.
The more I say 'Nicholas Richard OurSurname' to myself, the more I like it. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I love Richard and Nicholas. I would like to hear of a baby called Nicholas or Richard. Would make a nice change.

Love it, nice normal name which everybody should be able to spell and pronounce.

A friend of the family is 50 and has always got Nicholas but my 35 year old cousin gets Nick or Nicky off our Grandma.

This is what we're planning to call DS2, due in a couple of weeks. We've not told anyone real life so it's good to hear nice comments on here! We were pleased to finally agree on a classic name that everyone knows but which is well outside the top 100 (Ds1's name is top 10).

A good friend is Nicolas (dutch version maybe as his father is Dutch) ie without the h and is abbreviated to Nic which I like better than Nick. I like the names Nic and Nicolas.

I really like it. I see it in the same vein as David, Robert and Christopher - nice, classic names that don't get used much nowadays but I am sure they will be in vogue again in 10 years' time so you could be ahead of the trend!

Really like it, especially with nn Nico. Would have a bit meh about it until a few years ago as I knew quite a few of my own generation, but it doesn't seem to much used for babies/young children - have only come across two in five years of teaching. Definitely an underused classic nowadays.
