Eliza (NN Elsie) or Miranda (possible NN Marnie?)? Which goes better with Gabriel?

I like Miranda. The one I know is called Minnie

AllabouttheE · 22/08/2013 20:50

I have an Eliza. It was the biggest rising name last year, just reached top 100, probably that Doolittle girl.

Mine gets called Izzy by me but Lie-zah by little bro and school friends but more because its hard for them to pronounce the E sound at the front rolling into the L.

I also like Miranda.

TeaCuresEverything · 22/08/2013 20:34

I love Miranda, its my fave girls name but DH doesnt like it :( I love Miri for a nn :)

noodlebum · 22/08/2013 15:31

I like both names, Eliza slightly more. I also like the nn Marnie for Miranda (though Miranda's good on it's own), but not as much of a fan of Elsie as a nn for Eliza.

Sadie204 · 20/08/2013 22:25

I personally LOVE Eliza, want to use it if DC4 turns out to be a girl. Might need to work on DH first though as he's not convinced lol. Always reminds me of the book 'Pygmalion', love the character of Eliza Dolittle xx

I like Miranda and Miriam.

AngelaOxford · 20/08/2013 17:58

So you're planning on giving your children a name you like and then call them by a nickname?

superdupermama · 20/08/2013 14:01

I like Eliza, it is growing on me. I don't like Miranda, sorry. X

miffybun73 · 19/08/2013 22:31

Love them both.

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 19/08/2013 22:15

Thank you everybody, by the way.

She would have a cousin called Ellie so we couldn't use that. You may not be able to decide what their friends call your child but you can decide what you as parents are going to call them on a day-to-day basis.

Yes, Miriam is from the Old Testament. Mary is a later variant of Miriam.

Don't like Miranda? Eliza is nicer but people are more likely to call her ellie as a nickname rather rather than Elsie. I don't understand this nickname thing on here any way. I thought nicknames were what other people such as friends might shorten your name to, rather than it being another name your parents choose for you before you are born.

antshouse · 19/08/2013 21:05

I think its from the bible, Moses' sister.

OrlaNuttin · 19/08/2013 21:02

I like Miranda, and love Marnie. You could definitely use it as a name on its own.

Loathe Eliza and much prefer Elsie. Elsa is also very nice.

Pixielady83 · 19/08/2013 21:00

The TV show puts me off a bit but I doubt it will run for years and years so it may not be an issue once your DD is in school. I met a lovely little Miranda at a wedding a couple of years ago.

Vijac · 19/08/2013 20:54

I think Miranda is much nicer than Miriam. Just more modern I think. Miriam must be from Mary-Ann right?

antshouse · 19/08/2013 20:42

I like the show too but now associate Miranda with the character. I'm sure that won't be the case in 20 years though when your dd is filling out job applications.
I met a very dainty toddler called Miriam a few years ago and haven't met anyone else with the name since so I like the name.

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 19/08/2013 20:15

I think Mira as a NN would be fine. Miriam is a name I really liked when I first read it in a book years ago but sometimes now I think it's a bit...stodgy. Hmmm...do you think Miranda's gone down in popularity coz of the TV show (which I actually really like so it's a positive association for me)?

I like both but Miranda is my favourite, I've been thinking of putting it on my list. I was thinking of 'Mira' as a nn prounouced 'mee-ra' but not sure if that would sound odd.

I like Eliza nn Elsie. How about Miriam nn Miri. I can't take Miranda seriously at the mo because of the comedy show.

Blanketsandpillows · 19/08/2013 18:14

I really don't like Miranda at all. I like Eliza a lot. I like both nicknames too.

CruCru · 19/08/2013 17:48

Miranda is the name of the girl in The Collector. I like it more than Eliza.

Vijac · 19/08/2013 17:28

Miranda and marnie. Lovely. Eliza cute too.
