i'm so glad you're all chipping in. very helpful. and lots of time for me to come to my senses on the bad ones.

Hadley I like from reading The Paris Wife. Hadley was Ernest Hemingways wife. i like the masculine sound to the name.

Boys list - Reuben and Theo

suspiria · 19/08/2013 15:26

My favourites are Artemis, Beatrice, Delphi, Iris, Romy, Sylvie, Tabitha, Theodora
It's a really interesting list

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/08/2013 15:19

Artemis and Theodora are the only ones I like.

Oriunda · 19/08/2013 14:39

I like Artemis, Delphi (what about Delfina?), Esme and Hester. As for the so called 'playground' test, I really couldn't give a monkey's what other people think of my chosen name! I'll never be embarrassed to say/shout my DS's name out, I'm proud of him.

Laquila · 19/08/2013 11:10

I think we have quite similar taste, OP. from your original list I really like Hester, Ines and Edith. Have you considered Delphine, or Althea? Both were on our shortlist for a time.

From your boy's names, I love James (if we have a boy, this will be his middle name), Theo and Remy. TBH, I don't dislike any of your boys' names, although maybe not as keen on Ivor.

ch1134 · 19/08/2013 10:09

and for boys

Elliott - this is so popular, does no-one else think of 'Elliot huts', those horrible shed things we used as temporary classrooms (which never got replaced)? Also, most Elliotts are naughty in my experience!

Ivor - are you Scottish?
James/Jamie - ok
Miles - ok
Remy - no
Reuben - yes
Thomas -yes
Theo - ok
William - yes

your boys names are much nicer IMO!

ch1134 · 19/08/2013 10:05

I just wrote my impressions next to each one and then realised I sound like a horrible person so feel free to dismiss. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks as long as you like the name you choose. But you did say whittle down. If you paid any attention to me you'd be left with:

Edith, Iris, Kitty, for the following reasons...

Artemis/Art/Missy - sounds pretentious
April - ok, reminds me of teenage mutant hero turtles!
Astrid - I had a teacher named this so sounds old fashioned
Beatrice/Bea - very popular at the moment
Delphi - doesn't sound like a name
Edith - nice
Esme - ok, quite popular
Farrah - quite Hollywood
Hadley - is this a name?
Hester/Hettie - prefer Hattie but it's ok
Inez - are you from another country? otherwise will sound pretentious
Iris - lovely
Kit/Kitty - very cute
Nyx - where did you get this from?
Ora - as in the time? (latin languages)
Polly - sounds like a doll
Renee - personally don't like it
Romy - ok, makes me think of middle class girls at university
Sylvie - gaining popularity
Tabitha - sounds like a cat or the child of someone posh
Theodora/Thea/Teddy - a bit tomboyish

NoComet · 19/08/2013 01:13

Sodding Polly Pocket, I knew there was a reason why I particularly don't like Polly.

DD2 used to scatter 100's of stupid disturbing rubber clothes and shoes about the house.

MummyBeerest · 19/08/2013 01:11

Iris is beautiful. And all your boys names are great!

Congratulations Smile

RegularVoltaire · 19/08/2013 00:05

Okay, so these are my very honest first thoughts to the names:
Edith/Edie - gorgeous
Esme - lovely
Hester/Hettie - I don't like this (reminds me of Hippo - I have no idea why, but I accept that I'm rather strange ...)
Iris - lovely
Polly - pocket. Really don't like this
Sylvie - cute

Elliott - don't like
Ivor - the engine
James/Jamie - reliable
Miles - love this
Remy - remedial
Reuben - lovely
Thomas - timeless
Theo - lovely
William - timeless

Good luck Smile

hashtagwhatever · 18/08/2013 23:47

Tabitha Hadley sounds lovely.

NoComet · 18/08/2013 23:44

James and Thomas were both on my DS list and I know a nice Elliott, a great fun Myles and a very clever grown up Miles.

Reuben and Theo would be difficult to get past my family an DH, but I don't see why not.

Given your girls choices they are the two I think might suit you.

NoComet · 18/08/2013 23:38

Boys list are all nice except Remy and William.

I'm sorry I just couldn't have a DS called Willie

NoComet · 18/08/2013 23:36

Tabitha - here kitty kitty
Theodora- ok Thea - like

Nessalina · 18/08/2013 23:27

thatwasadaftidea · 17/08/2013 23:10

well i'm not really at the point of having a final choice. am ridiculously early on in pregnancy and have no idea if having a boy or girl. I have two boys, I woke up this morning in a state of fear that I don't like ANY girls names.
by bedtime tonight I'm down to 6 contenders. so that feels a lot better.
