Cool German girls' names?

Hi all

I am pretty fixed on wanting to call our DD Claudia but wondered if I should consider any other names. I seem to like fairly "Germanic" or Scandinavian names. I really like Ingrid but DH hates it and Astrid is a bit too popular where I live.

It's interesting how the lists vary in terms of when they were/are popular. Caip's list is basically popular names of women who are now 30 to 50, whereas mammaemma's list is their daughters/grandddaughters - popular names of babies and young girls now. Shout out 'Clara' or 'Helene/Lena' or 'Nele' at any playground and half the girls will turn round! And anything like Helga or Brunnhilde is essentially pre-war or 1950s at the latest. I know plenty of Brigittes, but none of them are under 50!

Some other names of women/girls I know - you might want to avoid these:
Grit (honestly, she's a lovely woman)
Frigga (10yo girl, named by fans of all things Scandinavian)

You'd also want to bear in mind that some names are the same as in the UK, but with very different pronunciations, eg Laura (to rhyme with how) or Julia (you-leeah).

Oh -- I love Renate and Leni, and Lena.

I also love Mummaemma's list (esp Leonie, Helena - Leni as a nn maybe - Frida, Johanna)

Another name I love, popular in Germany right now, is Marie, and I also love Romy, short for Rosemarie or as a name in its own right.

Pia and Paula are fairly popular in Germany at the moment. Stella, Pauline and Antonia are also in the top 100 or thereabouts. Also Mila and Mira.

Hey Crucru, most of these names are so NOT cool and are truly awful in the sense of sounding dated, sounding very typical of specific generation.
Lots of names mentioned here are...I'm lost for words.

I think mostly spot on are mummaemma and MissWimpy Smile if you're serioulsy considering names which are cool and yet timeless and cannot be pin-pointed too much to a certain social or age group. But maybe you want that, than please disregard my post Grin

I have a German friend called Lena, which I love. Last time round we also had both Ingrid and Astrid on our list.
