Guy - just doesn't seem like a 'baby' name to me

Although I guess all the grown up men called Guy were babies once!

Dh loves this name. I like Rufus.

We are at loggerheads.

I don't mind the name Guy, but I can't imagine saying it to a baby or toddler?

I find boys names hard too. I have a ds, who has the one boys name I really love!

Name will either be Guy Rufus or Rufus Guy....

I have a Rufus, so I am with you on that one :)

Why are boys names so much harder? DH and I had half a dozen girls names we liked, but took us forever to choose a boy's name we both liked.

Love Guy, would have been on our list if I didn't work with one. I had the same concern about a name on our shortlist, Seth, but views were similar to here, don't worry about it and you'll think up all kinds of nicknames!

GrandstandingBlueTit · 17/08/2013 05:41

Guy is infinitely better than Rufus.

Ihatepeas · 16/08/2013 22:36

I know two baby Guys. It is lovely and really suits them both!

hghkjh · 16/08/2013 22:17

I like Guy

Shrugged · 16/08/2013 20:34

I quite like Guy. It's more of a baby name than Malcolm, or Nigel. I find it entirely impossible to imagine Baby Malcolm.

YonilyDevotedToYou · 16/08/2013 20:20

My cousin's name is Guy and when he was a baby he was called 'Guysie'!

LittlePandaBear · 16/08/2013 20:07

Never met one but I like Guy.

You could just call him your little Guy while he's a baby Smile

siluria · 16/08/2013 20:01

I think Guy doesn't sound like a baby name because it is, as you say, a name that was probably more fashionable 30 or 40 years ago and hasn't swung back into fashion yet, so it feels a bit weird. I can't imagine naming a baby Brian for the same reason (though actually, I reckon Brian is totally due a comeback).

I much, much, much prefer Rufus of the two. What about Reuben? That's quite cute :)

DalmationDots · 16/08/2013 16:00

Your DS will be an adult for far longer than he will a baby. Much better a baby who doesn't have a cutesie name but grows up to have very nice classy adult's name, than a grown man with a ridiculous cutesie name!
Go for it :)

Frances - not quite! I like the name William, but Will Turner is Orlando Blooms Character in Pirates of the carabean so I don't want a child with that name - you can guess what our surname is! Put Guy in front of it, and it still seems a bit pirate like to me! Daft, I know!

My ds is Guy-I love the name [obviously] and it has always suited him [he is an adult now].I love that it can't be shortened and I love the fact that it is a really old name -there aren't so many about.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/08/2013 20:12

Guy is one name (the other is Seth) that I really, really dislike.

I think you'll need to start again and find something you can both learn to love.

FrancesHouseman · 15/08/2013 19:43

I'm guessing your surname is Blackbeard or Hornswaggle...

BeaLola · 15/08/2013 19:40

I do like Rufus but I really love Guy. I agree it isn't cutesy baby but he will only be a baby for a short while. I am probably biased because a dear friend is called Guy and he really is one of the loveliest people I have ever met.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/08/2013 16:12

Teddy? That's an adorable nickname but as a given name? No.

I do wonder how the children of people who have clearly forgotten they will one day be adults too feel about their names.

I like Rufus by the way OP. Rufus Guy could sound great, depending on your surname.

Makqueen · 15/08/2013 14:46

I know, I am just being daft I think. I'd get used to it.

When I had my ds, there was a woman who had called her ds 'Teddy'. She wouldn't let it be shortened to 'Ted' (and Teddy wasn't short for anything). It was cute when he was a baby, but I wonder what he thinks of it now that he is 11, especially with the 'y' spelling.

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/08/2013 14:44

I like it.

Remember he'll be an adult far longer than he will be a baby/toddler/child.

curlew · 15/08/2013 14:41

Well, considering he'll only be a baby for a year, and an adult for 60/70.......

niffernaffer · 15/08/2013 14:39

Could you go for Gus instead perhaps (combo of Rufus and Guy?)

Makqueen · 15/08/2013 14:39

I am getting a bit foot stampy about wanting Rufus though!

We have a surname which would make Guy Surname sound like a pirate. To me, anyway!

I think Guy is a lovely name. I had a childhood friend who was called Guy, he was a very cute wee boy. Tbh personally I prefer it to Rufus.

sonlypuppyfat · 15/08/2013 14:27

No more odd than cooing Wilfred or Stanley which seem to be the only names anyone ever comes up with on here
