6 days to go and thought we'd decided on Elsa then came across Maya. Opinions please?

I agree with Sandberry, there's ruddy oodles of Maya/Maias etc where I live too.

Elsa on the other hand isn't as popular, and it's a great name.

Whatever you call her, she'll be gorgeous anyway! Good luck!

sandberry · 16/08/2013 12:34

Where I am in London it is probably the number one name, it just looks less popular than it is because of the multiple spellings. One day on postnatal ward very recently there were 5 baby girls called
Maya times 2
Maja times 1
Maia times 1
Mya times 1
It is very, very trendy.
I'd go for Elsa.

treaclesoda · 16/08/2013 08:49

I think its lovely but I know five little girls (all aged 5 or under) with this name, so if it bothers you that others would have the same name, it might not be the best choice. (Disclaimer, I don't think there is much point trying to find an unusual name, as you might still end up with someone of the same name living next door no matter how unusual your choice, but I know its something that's important to a lot of people).

Angelou

ExcuseTypos · 16/08/2013 08:47

I always think of Maya Angelo when I hear it. I love that woman.

mrstalbear · 16/08/2013 08:37

i like it but prefer Elsa

MerryMarigold · 16/08/2013 08:28

MUCH prefer Elsa. I know gazillions of Mayas, though it's a bit 6 years ago now so maybe not so many around of your dd's age group.

chartreuse · 16/08/2013 08:27

I prefer Elsa

evamummy · 16/08/2013 07:43

Maya, Maja, Mya, Mia - seem quite popular at the moment.

Elsa seems more classic.

BlueStarsAtNight · 16/08/2013 07:38

I much prefer Elsa. Maya seems to be everywhere at the moment and I feel pretty blah about it. Elsa is really pretty and much less common too.

ExcuseTypos · 15/08/2013 22:14

Maya is lovely. I don't think they'll be confusion over spelling. Maya is the proper traditional way to spell it.

JacqueslePeacock · 15/08/2013 22:11

Martha? (Trying to think of a cross between Maya and Elsa!)

JacqueslePeacock · 15/08/2013 22:07

Think your DD might have confusion over spelling, what with Maia, Maer, Mya and all. Elsa is OK. Eliza is nice...? Any others you like?

Wallison · 15/08/2013 22:07

I think it's a lovely name that 'travels well' iyswim - could fit into a lot of different countries and cultures. I am a bit biased though because I know a lovely Maya - she is very cool (and very beautiful - wonder if it's the same person resipsa?).

mindyourownbusiness · 15/08/2013 22:00

Maya - sorry. There are lots of Indian restaurants called that I believe so it would just remind me of my favourite curry.

mindyourownbusiness · 15/08/2013 21:58

My local indian restaurant is called Myah - err.... so that'll be a 'No' Grin

TheBleedinObvious · 15/08/2013 21:50

I originally thought it was pronounced may-a.

Then I met several and got used to saying my-a.

Then the other day I met a may-a.

Confused
Rhubarbgarden · 14/08/2013 20:26

Dislike

Stokes · 14/08/2013 19:19

Much prefer Elsa. Maya is a nice name, but I know lots of little Mayas, Mias etc (and I know very few children).

MoonHare · 14/08/2013 18:59

Elsa is much nicer than Maya imo. Don't really like Maya, Mia, Maia any of those.

NadiaWadia · 14/08/2013 17:21

Elsa is nice, but Maya is lovely. Exotic and international too!

NadiaWadia · 14/08/2013 17:19

If I saw Maya I would assume pronounced to rhyme with fire. Lovely name.

ImpulsePineapple · 14/08/2013 17:19

Love it. Wanted it for DD2, but DH vetoed. Much prefer it to Elsa.

squoosh · 14/08/2013 17:10

I think it's a bit of a blah name, so interchangeable with all the Mias and Maias and nowhere near as nice as Elsa.

Medal · 14/08/2013 16:58

My daughter's middle name too, love it Smile. We pronounce it My-a.
