Sofia Melina?

Melina is after my south american grandmother and I loved sofia from the start but wanted a name that translated well across Spanish and English that incorporates both my babies cultures Grin

Sorry, I really didn't mean to offend or sound overly negative with the 'melina/melena' reference. I don't work in the medical profession but I know what melena is - I thought it was in common parlance. I have a friend called Melina - she's lovely, not from the UK and, unfortunately, when I first met her I thought "what a shame her name makes me think of melena". I would usually have written all this out in my original post but I was knackered and (stupidly!) checking MN instead of trying to get back to sleep. Smile

Apologies again for any offence. I'm aware that some folk have family members with this name. I thought it was worth pointing out its similarity to a not-so-pleasant word in the English language though.

FootOfOurStairs · 15/08/2013 07:42

I'm not at all sure about Wise Poo!!

FootOfOurStairs · 15/08/2013 07:41

I'm not being horrible. In fact I've tried v hard to be balanced and point out the pros and cons.

I asked for opinioms on my short lists for exactly this reason - I wanted to know others' opinions, and to have potential pit falls such as dodgy nn or rude initials pointed ou to me in case I was unaware of them.

I don't think anyone has been rude at all. Many posters have praised Sofia, and some have pointed out the possible cross over in pn (though OP has replied they are pn differently) and difficulty with diff meanings in diff language.

If the name is decided and you want an unequivocal "that's lovely" then you have to post it as a birth announcement and not ask for opinion s.

Grin MunchkinJess.

MunchkinJess · 15/08/2013 07:30

thanks exoticfruits...I do agree.

but just to insert some humour here as its all getting a bit too serious sophia means wisdom..so shall I just call my baby wise poo ?

alot of names have other meanings in other languages and cultures

If I had a grandmother from another culture I would think it rather horrible if everyone was so rude about the name when I had explained it was a family name.

FootOfOurStairs · 15/08/2013 07:23

How is Melina pronounced? I was reading it Mel-eena? Is it Mel-eye-na then?

MunchkinJess · 15/08/2013 07:19

I dont think anyone is being horrible however, just stating black poo without explaining doesnt come across very well !

and yet again I dont know why Melena ever came up...Melina is the name I said ...it is not Melena ..they dont sound the same at all and have different spellings and Melina does not mean poo!Wink

Sorry

That have other meanings, or very close sounds and d people get on fine with them as names - Candida, Rafia etc. As a middle name it's going to be less used etc anyhow.

Sofia is very pretty, a lovely name. It's in the top 10 which would put me off, but it's there due to beong a great name.

FootOfOurStairs · 15/08/2013 07:14

How is it pronounced? If it is mel-eena, then it is a homopgone for melaena - which is black/bloody stool. I'm afraid as a nurse that was my immediate thought on reading it. If you like it and have no medical background, and you see it as v separate to melaena, then of course, use it. There are lots of names that have

TheRealFellatio · 15/08/2013 07:07

We are not being 'horrible'. Hmm

Munchkin is asking for opinions on the names. If you can't be honest to a stranger on the internet about this kind of thing then when can you? Surely she wants to gauge reactions to it - hence the question?

Although I will admit, with forrin names it's a bit different - loads of foreign names sound like something else or mean something different in another language. It just depends whether or not that bothers you enough. As this is only a middle name anyway perhaps it won't be an issue.

exoticfruits · 15/08/2013 07:03

And black poo never crossed my mind.

exoticfruits · 15/08/2013 07:02

I think that you should ignore people being horrible- it is a lovely touch to use your South American grandmother's name as a middle name. I think they work well to incorporate the two cultures- go for it!

TheRealFellatio · 15/08/2013 06:56

what melena is, sorry

TheRealFellatio · 15/08/2013 06:56

Yes, but when people hear the name if they know what Melina is they will immediately think of black poo.

dancemom · 15/08/2013 06:55

Sofia is lovely but with the new Disney Character Sofia the First it may become very popular

MunchkinJess · 15/08/2013 06:44

Either way Melena is wrong....its Melina...anyways thanks for everyone's input

TheRealFellatio · 15/08/2013 06:13

No, I think BOF meant that it is liteally black poo, not that it is her opinion of the name!

TheRealFellatio · 15/08/2013 06:12

Sofia is lovely but I really don't like Melina.

MunchkinJess · 15/08/2013 06:01

BOF how very mature and constructive !

OP posts:
BOF · 15/08/2013 02:24

Melena is black poo.

DPotter · 15/08/2013 02:20

Love the Sofia but not the Melina in any circumstances - sounds like nasty medical condition

TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff · 15/08/2013 02:17

I love it, my friend's daughter is called Melina, and she was considering Sofia for her middle name!

I think the names to well together, and Sofia is very pretty but elegant sounding. Not frilly either, so I like it.

MrsMongoose · 15/08/2013 02:06

I wouldn't use two names ending the same, but both are pretty on their own.

MunchkinJess · 14/08/2013 20:38

Melina and melena have very different pronunciations..plus Melina a middle name
