And can you please give me some examples? Is it a sort of trying to be trendy name that will date?

Tabitha is totally a marmite name! Whenever it's mentioned on here, half the replies will be gushing (oh love it, just a little bit posh but not too much etc) and the other half of the replies are no it's awful (only a cat name, bewitched etc).

MortifiedAdams · 10/08/2013 23:28

I want Olive. I have been met with mixed reactions that are at polar opposite ends of the scale.

Maisie. I hate it. Others love it. I dont know anyone who is "meh" about it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 10/08/2013 23:26

Stanley is something of a marmite name

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2013 23:23

:)

nilbyname · 10/08/2013 23:22

A-woooooooooo! Remus

nilbyname · 10/08/2013 23:22

Hmmm...maybe but I think daisy and Tabitha are rather traditional names. Thus not "marmite"

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2013 23:22

I don't class Wolf etc as Marmite though, because I think Marmite needs to be a pretty much 50/50 split of feeling, whereas I assume that 96% of people (or so) would think Wolf is pretty ridiculous.

youcantplayonbrokenstrings · 10/08/2013 23:18

Nilnyname, you are missing the point! Marmite is also very pedestrian!

youcantplayonbrokenstrings · 10/08/2013 23:16

Noah. I really hate it, butit is very popular.

Ditto Reuben.

picnicbasketcase · 10/08/2013 23:16

I think Xanthe is quite horrible but everyone else seems to love it so I guess I'm wrong. I can't stand any names ending in 'ette' or 'een' either.

nilbyname · 10/08/2013 23:13

Daisy, Tabitha? Really, very pedestrian!

I give you...
Igantious
Wolf
Phoenix
Echo
Bluebell

All names of friends kids.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/08/2013 23:12

I've never seen a name on a 'names you love' thread, that hasn't also appeared on a 'names you hate'

Mine, my DH's and DS's make regular appearances on both.

There may be some Venn Diagram showing names that Everyone Agrees On (Oliver? Thomas? Grace? Emily?) but otherwise most people happily and violently disagree. Which is a good thing as otherwise you'd have a classful of kids with half a dozen names between them.

youarewinning · 10/08/2013 23:06

Isobel is a beautiful name - not one I'd consider as a marmite name. But guess that proves what others are saying. Everyone has differing opinions and what you think would be a name people could love/hate are names people are just meh about.

I see Tabitha and Annabelle come up as marmite names on here. I know 1 of each and love them. However, Tabitha is one of those names I'd have discarded as 'don't do it' before my cousin was born.

Onyabike · 10/08/2013 22:54

Yes I agree, Isobel does inspire a lot of discussion, but those that don't like it tend to describe it as "meh" and "dull" because they think it is over popular and over used, which I think is vey different to a "marmite" response!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2013 22:45

Isobel intends to inspire a lot of discussion on here. Personally I love it, but I am biased!

Onyabike · 10/08/2013 22:40

FWIW, I don't think Isobel is remotely "marmitey", but do think Quentin and Edith (and possibly Daisy) is.

Onyabike · 10/08/2013 22:35

I agree that no name will be unanimously liked, however, a "marmite" name would be one which would be considered less of a "safe" option, and would tend to generate a really strong "love" or "hate" reaction.

shoobidoo · 10/08/2013 22:15

EVERY single name will be liked by someone and disliked by another! Why would or should we all have the same tastes?

Not sure why Isobel, Quentin or Daisy are more 'marmitey' than, say, Jack, Edith or Sarah...Confused? They're all normal names, some more popular than others, but all well known names.

I personally like most of the names on here, in particular Edith, Ottilie, Quentin and Amos - all cool, classic underused names imo.

FromageFrog · 10/08/2013 21:22

Alice is bland to me, a bit meh. Along with Anna, another name which is loved on here.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/08/2013 21:21

Daisy, Peaches, Tarquin, Isolde, Tristan, Theodore, Dinky-Winky , Lla, Po

Mintyy · 10/08/2013 21:19

Point is someone will hate any name you love.

One of my most disliked names is Alice. I have no idea why and most people will think it is innocuous enough, or love it.

FromageFrog · 10/08/2013 21:16

Florence - judging by dhs and others reactions.

I am still pushing to use it though.

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2013 20:24

Emmeline

Loved by many. Hated by me.

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2013 20:23

Milo

Amos

Love or hate?

DS1 was very nearly Milo. People have since told me they think it's hideous. There are quite a few in his year at school, so I'm not alone.

Smartiepants79 · 10/08/2013 20:20

Almost anything if you read the threads on here! I obviously love the two names I've given my DC but many Mnetters think they are too cutesy/popular/girls etc...
Many names come up on here that I think are Goddam awful but others adore them! C'est la vie!
