Alternative to Mavis?

sweetiepie1979 · 05/08/2013 10:10

My mothers name is Mavis, but don't know about calling baby that. I need something similar, Meabh/mave not an option, we already have one in the family. DH thought Mabel? What do people think of that? Is it a bit wacky? I don't want to be funky or wacky with names really...

Eve Ava Mae Maude

telsa · 06/08/2013 08:38

I have no evil agenda. I never in my life thought Ethel, Enid, Edith, Nora, Brenda and so on would be fashionable again, and they are! Round my way anyway.

cafecito · 06/08/2013 03:42

Evelina, Ava, Eveline, Maeve

cafecito · 06/08/2013 03:40

Anything is a good alternative to Mavis

I guess Maisie and Marla I like

Um, can't you just use Mavis as a middle name?

Msgilbertblythe · 06/08/2013 03:25

Maebh - pronounced Maeve (irish version)

acheekyvimto · 06/08/2013 00:09

My dd middle name is mae after my grandma mavis. Ias that an option. She suggested tbe spelling.

Mae ia pretty and rather underused as a first name. Unfortunately it has become an overused middle name.

squoosh · 05/08/2013 23:23

Ignore Telsa, she has some evil agenda (possibly).

Your said yourself that your mother even dislikes the name, she'd probably slap you for inflicting it on her grandchild.

I'm going to have placards printed that say Savis from Mavis.

telsa · 05/08/2013 23:19

I bet you any money Mavis is an uber cool name in 2 years. Be ahead of the curve. Or go for Mabel.

sweetiepie1979 · 05/08/2013 23:04

I like Ava but it reminds me too much of Hitler. Thanks for all the lovely suggestions! Im still pondering on Mabel.

Has anyone said Maude? Or Maggie?

squeak2392 · 05/08/2013 20:45

I've gotta admit I chuckled when I thought you were actually thinking of naming her Mavis, but I think it's a name I could easily get used to on a young'un. It's certainly not out of step with the other granny-chic names around right now.

In reference to Mavis meaning 'song thrush' :
Melody
Carmen
Caroline
Chantelle
Clio (originally pn cly-oh but clee-oh much nicer :P)
Lyric
Odelle/Odele/Odella/Odelia
Ronni
Shiri

Robin
Ava/Avis/Evelyn (from same root as Mavis)
Tori
Wren

I'd go with Ava :)

Dainty little girly Mavis/She is such a rara avis/All the money I can save is/All to be for Mavis mine.

It's not that bad.

FingersCrossedLegsNot · 05/08/2013 16:44

Oh Mabel is just gorgeous and sooooooooooooooo much better than Mavis.

How about Myrtle, Marnie, Mamie or Maisie?

AndWhenYouGetThere · 05/08/2013 16:20

Does your DM have a middle name you like?

sweetiepie1979 · 05/08/2013 15:27

Mae is my dd 1 middle name . Does it matter do you think? Ach it's probably a boy in which case it's Charles but will call him Charlie. That seems to be the only name we like so far

soontobeslendergirl · 05/08/2013 13:45

soontobeslendergirl · 05/08/2013 13:43

Phew! The world of names is your oyster now sweetiepie.

soontobeslendergirl · 05/08/2013 13:37

Ha ha, can you imagine your mum's disapointment when you give your daughter a name she dislikes and then her trying to balance that with the pleasure that you have named her after her :)

What else do you like?

sweetiepie1979 · 05/08/2013 13:32

Hee Hee everybody is being so nice but honest. Thank you. No, my mum dosent like Mavis either so I'll move on.

I like Mavis.

But I think you should give your DD a name you love, and use your mothers name as a middle name.

NonnoMum · 05/08/2013 13:12

I love Maeve.

Maybelle?

Mae?

soontobeslendergirl · 05/08/2013 13:07

Hmm - might be a bit too retro for me, but I like Rita :)

Do you have to name the baby after your Mum? It sounds like she has already been honoured. Maeve is lovely but already used.

I think your child needs her own name and you could put Mavis in the middle.
