Horatio - good, bad or ugly?

DS is now 9 days old and is known as Little Man or Monkey or numerous other pet names that wouldn't be allowed on a birth certificate.

We want unusual but classy and maybe classic/due for a revival. Like English origin names too.

Currently agreeing on Horatio, maybe Montgomery. But just trying to gauge wider opinion. ..

Thoughts on Horatio? Any alternatives we might go for?

“Unfortunate enough to be named horatio” thats a violation man. Us Horatios are the peak of human evolution and if u disagree u clearly have no taste

Personally as a Horatio myself I would have to say this name is unmatched by any other combination of syllables in any language. Any of you that say different are clearly wrong.

My great Grandpa was Horatious.

I love it. I worked with one known as " Horry". I like Atticus too.

I don't like Montgomery. Maximilian is much better but they will both get shortened by everyone. And I hate the short forms more than the proper names!

Personally I don't like it BUT how about Raich(pronounced raysh.

Horatio Carter played football for Sunderland many years ago his nn was Raich.

Hhhhmmm. Jimmy Montgomery also played for Sunderland.

Horatio is Horatio Nelson. It will be hooray for short and constant jokes. I really wouldn't. How about using it as a middle name? I know a Nelson. Mother is a bit image conscious... does say, trying to hard to me. Remember they have to live with this name.

I love Horatio. My oldest was at serious risk of being called Horatio, hadn't she turned out to be a girl.

I think Horatio is cool. I also like most if the other names mentioned here excepting Terrence and Clive.

I think in the same vein as the Posy, Flora thread from the other day in our children's generation there is likely to be more with names like Horatio so it won't be out there when you meet Dr Horatio/Rocky as per another thread Eric.

Also, why the obsession with nicknames. I just named my children what I wanted to. Some nn have emerged but it wasn't consciously done.

I think Horatio is a very cool name. It's classic, masculine and not overused - great name!

Agree that kids are much more accepting of different names than some of seem to think.

I love it! If I had one he'd be Harry for short though. Trying to persuade DH that another DC is a good idea (DD2 has just turned 1), and that if its a boy, we will call him Horatio Grin

I adore Horatio! DD could well have been a Horatio, and was on the shortlist for DS. Ignore all the comments on here and go for it if you love it. Would make me happy to know there is a little Horatio in the world :-)

Bad. I like this style of name but no,you can't! It was unusual even when Mr Nelson was named it. The English form being Horace of course.

I came across a little boy named Horatio earlier this year on a long train journey. I was amazed given his siblings names. The memory of his mum bellowing "RATIO FUCKING SHUT THE FUCK UP" down the train carriage will live with me for a long time.
