Would you say al-ee-sha or al-iss-ee-ya? I've got two in my new class in September so just been thinking about it. Id say the latter to be honest.

I had two Alicias in one class and each pronounced it differently. It avoided the Alicia B and Alicia C scenario.

Sunnysummer · 31/07/2013 09:56

I know one of each pronounciation, both British. Given the common variation, they're unlikely to be offended or surprised if you have to ask!

merrymouse · 31/07/2013 09:47

Could you call them both Al?

lottiegarbanzo · 31/07/2013 09:44

Ask them?

But generally I agree that a-liss-ee-a is UK, a-leesh-a US. Just as Par-is-ee-an is UK, par-eesj-un US.

FannyMcNally · 31/07/2013 09:32

Yes, I never knew how to pronounce it in MT either!

Because Alice is pronounced with an 's' sound I would assume Alissia until corrected otherwise.

I remember being thrown by this name in Malory Towers and pronouncing it Al-lick-ee-ah in my head.

ALittleBitOfMagic · 31/07/2013 09:25

I would pronounce that aleesha

MinnieBar · 31/07/2013 09:24

I think Al-iss-iya is (broadly speaking) uk, and Al-esha is American.

I am basing this on a) two British Alicias I've met, b) the assumption that the name is a derivative of Alice and c) The Good Wife Grin

valiumredhead · 31/07/2013 09:20

Al iss ee ya

Christelle2207 · 31/07/2013 09:09

When I say wrong I mean wrong to her!

Christelle2207 · 31/07/2013 09:08

The second, however I know an Alicia and people always pronounce it the wrong way, a-lee-sha and I know that really winds her up.

Smartiepants79 · 31/07/2013 09:05

Al -iss-ee-ya.

BoohPear · 31/07/2013 09:05

I would say Al-iss-eya.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 31/07/2013 09:04

A-LEEsha, going by someone I know.

Goldmandra · 31/07/2013 09:04

Al-iss-ee-ya but I have heard lots of people pronounce it the other way.

zoetstoffen · 31/07/2013 09:03

I work with one, and she pronounces it Al-ee-sha (though she did say the majority of people assume it to be Al-iss-e-a).
