My husband and I are talking baby names and I love love love genevieve. My husband is not sure, he thinks it sounds made up :-s
When I showed him it has been used in the uk since the 19th century, he said he doesn't think other people will like it. :-(
He is t to keen on the nickname gen, is it too far to give her the nickname eve?
Please help us! X

It's my favourite name at the moment :)

scarletforya · 03/08/2013 16:14

I love Genivieve and would have used it but fur the fact it would be shortened to Jenny which I dislike. I do like Ginny though but you couldn't trust people to use it!

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 03/08/2013 16:05

Not out there but not too popular, nice. Have come across a couple - one teenaged, one at primary school.

Turniptwirl · 03/08/2013 15:52

I know a few aged between. 5 and mid twenties. Rare enough that its noticed but not unheard of. I'm not a big fan personally but it's not offensive in any way

sleepingbeautiful · 03/08/2013 01:30

Great name to use!
Lots of nn potential too, and Eve sounds fine.
I know a grown up one of French-African origin who pronounces the French way and has nn Vivi, and a 1 year old who has her name pronounced the usual English way and her baby nn is Genie (she is slightly obsessed with popping out from behind things to do peekaboo, bless!).

Rhubarbgarden · 02/08/2013 23:48

I worked with one for a while. She never shortened it and if anyone else tried to, they got short shrift.

Bumblebee78 · 02/08/2013 20:13

I love the name Genevieve, but then i also like Vivian. I also like Gen for short. I think it sounds beautiful. X ps our name for a girl was Caitlin but never got to use it as we got boys. I went by the rule that if you can find a name that fits a pop star, politician and poet you cant go too wrong!

CruCru · 02/08/2013 20:02

I like it and it is a proper name. However I can't spell or pronounce it properly. Would that bug you?

RabbitFromAHat · 01/08/2013 21:44

I think it's beautiful. The one person I know with that name sometimes has it shortened to Vivi which also suits her (her picture should be in the dictionary under vivacious).

mewkins · 01/08/2013 21:41

I really like it- the cute dog in Madeleine :)
Would probably shorten to Ginny or Genie but that's cos I'm lazy

tabulahrasa · 31/07/2013 12:21

I know one, it's nice - the only pitfalls are it's very hard for young children to say and she had problems learning to write it... because of the length and keeping the right number of e's in it, lol (she often added extra just to make sure there were enough)

GoodMorningMoon · 31/07/2013 12:18

I met a baby girl last week named Genevieve nn Evie. She was adorable, and I kept the name in my head as a new favourite Wink

Keztrel · 31/07/2013 11:27

I've loved that name since I was about 5! I especially like the French pronunciation, but obv that would only work in France/if you were French! I like all the nicknames that come from it too. Eve, Evie, Gen, Genny, Ginny...

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 31/07/2013 10:24

No. You can't have it. I desperately wanted it fir DD2 but DH vetoed. So now no-one js allowed it. So there. Grin

KnittedWaffle · 31/07/2013 09:16

I love it.
Plenty of nickname potential (although I would insist on the full name). If changed my name it would be to Genevieve!

mintyneb · 31/07/2013 09:09

Beautiful name, friends teenage daughter has always gone by the nn Evie

Christelle2207 · 31/07/2013 09:05

Pleased to have found this. Genevieve is on our list too, but more likely as middle name.

88keys · 30/07/2013 11:33

It's a beautiful name. I know a Genevieve who's called Evie for short, which is pretty.

ThisIsYourSong · 30/07/2013 11:06

I love it but it will get shortened. Sounds like your DH is the one who needs to be convinced though

amessagetoyouYoni · 30/07/2013 11:02

I would not think this was a strange or 'made up' name. Its a classic, to my ears. I really like it.

iseenodust · 30/07/2013 10:59

Like it. Way better than Geraldine.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 30/07/2013 10:55

I love it.

And actually, I think Jenny is pretty

WeAreEternal · 30/07/2013 10:45

My SIL is called Genevieve, she is half French, most people call her Genni (as in Jenny).

It's a lovely name I don't like it shortened though I prefer it as a full name.

NellyTheElephant · 30/07/2013 10:42

A god friend of mine is Genevieve, her nn is Eva (pronounced Ava rather than Eeva)

Sunnysummer · 29/07/2013 22:49

It's lovely, and we know two, so I've always thought that it's on the good side of unusual - recognisable but uncommon!

The only downside is that as 5madthings said, Gen is the natural nickname and is a bit less interesting.
