What do people think? (nb I'm not actually pregnant just curious). I came across it recently and loved it but never heard it before. Does it have a history?

Just like Yomama I thought of the character in A History of Love. It's a great book! Alma works well in many different languages.

I know of someone who called their baby girl Alma this year, but she lives in Sweden. I wonder if it's more popular there? My mum also has a friend called Alma, in her 60's. To be honest I thought it was very old fashioned but could be due a come back!

I think of Alma Cogan. Also, I think it means apple in Hungarian. I like it a lot (not because of the apple thing especially, though)...

I like it, but I'm possibly biased because I used to know a very lovely Alma - she had Italian heritage. It's a very serene name I think. I like Alba and Anna too.

About what YoMamma said- in aramaic it means 'world', and in hebrew it is the name of a precious stone..beautiful name,used quite a lot in my part of the world!

I love love love it! It's the name of all the female characters in the History of Love which I'm reading atm. It also has lovely meanings in a variety of languages.
