Stupid reasons your dp gave to veto a name. (light hearted)

I will admit this came from a comment on the Imogen Tamsin thread as it reminded me of dh when we were looking for names for our children.

He doesn't like what he says are " weak" names so for him Christopher and Alastair are "weak names"

Wouldn't consider Tristan and Sebastian as they were gay names.. (err how the F can a name be gay?)

and it was incredible for a guy who went to a all boys school the amount of girls names that were vetoed because it reminded him of a girl from when he was at school.....

I was like... Hmm

Disclaimer this is considered to be lighthearted..

Obviously I had sound reasons for each of the suggestions he came up with like " No I dont like it" :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Ihatepeas · 12/09/2013 10:11

Oo i have loads of these!!
Two that really stuck in my mind..

Benedict ..bendy dick
Edward.. Egg but no sausage!!

Hawkinzy · 12/09/2013 09:42

Hahaha some of these are absolutely hilarious Grin Please let there be more?! Grin

LazyMonkeyButler · 21/08/2013 10:52

We have a few too - it's actually a wonder we managed to name 3 DCs!

Sebastian - too posh (and also gay).
Elliot - "eats paste" whatever that means. As does Louis (pronounced Loo-ee).
Christian - too religious.
Sam (for a boy) - "I went to school with a horrible girl called Sam".
Isaac - too "wet". Apparently you couldn't imagine a grown man saying "I'm off for a beer with Isaac". Like that's a reason Hmm.
Levi - jeans.
Tyler - "roof, floor or walls?".

Polly - parrot or "Polly put the kettle on".
Natalie - "wrong generation".

luckyclucky · 21/08/2013 10:39

Lydia- sounds like Thalidomide Confused
Toby- a dogs name
Isaac, Elijah- too biblical & Jewish & that's not a good thing with the Islamist extremists at the moment- seriously WTF??!! (By his decree Joseph wasn't too biblical- I mean its not like there's any Joseph's in the bible is there?!!) Confused
Chloe- name of his cousins first wife who dumped him 2 weeks after the wedding
Jude (for a boy)- its a girls name & everyone will call him Judy

EspressoMonkey · 21/08/2013 10:22

Whenever i suggested Saffron DH would reply "rice".

miffybun73 · 19/08/2013 22:37

I think that most of these are actually very good reasons.

Some very sensible DPs out there :) especially agree with most of Alisvolatpropiis's list of reasons.

Froblawd · 19/08/2013 20:54

Ffion because it is also the name of William Hague's wife.

picnicbasketcase · 19/08/2013 16:21

Sean - drug dealer name
Lola - dancer with fruit on head
Anastasia - anaesthesia
Bethany - Bethlehem

Confused
Oxtailchambermaid · 19/08/2013 16:05

Lara = No, the tomb raider already has that name
Matilda = Well, she's not Australian is she?
Clara = No, that's a character in Back to the Future 3
Lana = sounds too Eastern European
Tilly = you're not naming our daughter after a bloody horse

commsgirl · 19/08/2013 15:33

Arabella - 'Arry? Like 'Arry Potter

Owen - I knew an Owen once, I didn't like him.

My dad actually vetoed my name because he'd just taken on a temporary PA for two months who had the same name and he thought it'd be weird. He changed his mind when I was born, they couldn't settle on anything else and my mum gently reminded him that I'd be around for much longer than two months!

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/08/2013 10:28

Martha - "It's a dog's name."

On his secret name list for DD2, he had such horrors as Drusilla (to which I said "that's a middle aged woman with dark hair, a huge chest and too much make up"). And Frederika. No. Just, no.

We got through 5 name books and took 6 weeks to name DD2. We booked the registrar as late as possible and came up with a name the night before.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 19/08/2013 10:26

DP vetoed almost every boys name going but never with a good reason just used to laugh and say no way we're using that name. Names he found hilarious included Alexander, Oliver, Noah, George (glad about that one after the royal baby), Henry. I have no idea why but his mum and brother both reacted in the same way to many of them Confused

His suggestions: Sami (after Sami hypia, ex Liverpool player), but he was not willing to compromise to Samuel or Sam; or frankie, his surname begins with F and has a k in it, so it sounded like a Beano character.

God help us if we have another boy.

mamadoc · 19/08/2013 10:15

DH could come up with a bad celebrity association for almost any name I liked. He is the king of the veto but never came up with anything himself.examples included:
Naomi- Naomi Campbell
Esther- Esther Rantzen
Lawrence- Llewelyn bowen

cleoowen · 19/08/2013 10:03

Toby, it was the name of someone I was kind of dating but not really before I met him over 10 years ago.

He also didn't like names like Sebastian because it was posh or Joel because it's too American.

AngelaOxford · 19/08/2013 10:03

I would probably veto names that don't match my children's surname AT ALL. Also, those that remind me of dog names.

I wouldn't veto names of family members or friends, or names of children from my school that were notorious for something, simply because that leaves us with NO names left!

Wishfulmakeupping · 19/08/2013 10:00

I did refuse a name because its a character in eastenders (I probably would have found other reasons though)

Minion · 19/08/2013 09:53

Not him, but me..
He wants Allegra but it makes me think of spiders.
And sophie... Weak weak weak.

CoteDAzur · 19/08/2013 09:22

Ege - You want our boy to be called Egghead at school?
Erkan - What? You want to call our child Air Con, as in air conditioning? Shock

Valentina - Sounds like a porn star Hmm

ccsays · 19/08/2013 09:19

Eesh, best hope you don't have gay sons then for all those DH's so opposed to 'gay' names. Confused

sashh · 19/08/2013 09:05

Laughing out loud at this.

If I'm bored later I might write a program where you can select a name and it will come up with

"No NM's partner says it...." ends in a 'd', is too posh, too weak etc

kiwik · 19/08/2013 01:10

DH tried to veto DS3's name several times. As I almost died in childbirth, was under GA, and DS3 was rushed off to NICU, he gave him the name so that he wouldn't just be babyboySurname in his incubator. Smile

NoComet · 18/08/2013 18:45

My DM and DSIS vetoed Esther because of Esther Ransom too.

DH vetoed Rebecca because it was his first girlfriend and DMIL didn't like her. Actually reading between the lines she had MH issues and DMIL didn't want her PFB getting hurt.

QuietNinjaTardis · 18/08/2013 18:27

Dh vetoed theo because its a "black" name apparently. Yes I did have words.
He vetoed every single boys name I came up with just because he didn't like it. Ds is called the one and only boys name he suggested that was sensible
He's now grumpy because I am vetoing all the crap girls names he is suggesting in this pregnancy Grin

Wishfulmakeupping · 18/08/2013 18:21

Arthur because it reminded him of Arthur fowler
Henry for boy/Harriet for girl because surname begins with H and they'd sound like cartoon characters
Ivy, Edith, Betsy grandma names

Sadie204 · 18/08/2013 17:26

Lol at some of the posts on here! Fortunately my DH and I have pretty similar tastes so most names I like he does too. A few I got though were;

Max - cos its a dogs name (we used to have a neighbour with a Rottie called it)
Noah - People will sing who built the ark?
Imogen - Sounds like a poledancer Confused
Dexter - Ginger scientist
Elliot - Bit 'gay' for a boy but he loves it for a girl??

This comes from a man who I let name DD1 Phoebe after the character in 'Charmed' then when we had DD2, suggested Piper after one of the other sisters lol! No chance! We're now looking for names for DC4 and has commented that it's still lovely if it's a girl Hmm I do however love Paige but it's just a bit weird to have them together lol
