So, Junior Panda almost has a name... DH prefers one, I prefer another. It's DEADLOCK - we need your help!

  1. Aubin Laurence Stephen [2 syllable surname starting with A]
  2. Felix Laurence Stephen [same surname]
  3. They're both hideous
  4. Either is good

Stephen as you might guess is a non-negotiable family name. I won't say who prefers which but would love to hear your thoughts.

I don't really like either TBH. How about shortening Laurence to Laurie and having that as a first name? Laurie Stephen has a ring to it IMO.

squoosh · 25/07/2013 12:51

They also use Rory as a girls name but nothing will ever convince me that Rory is a 'girls' name.

squoosh · 25/07/2013 12:50

Aubrey now considered unisex because America has adopted it in recent years as a girls name.

It's still a boys name though.

SlouchingPanda · 25/07/2013 12:49

Aubrey definitely unisex according to Wikipedia

Yes, Aubin is of French origin - can be surname or christian name.

All of our chosen names are either saints' names or biblical names which is important to us...

Still thinking! We have six weeks, right?!

  1. I'm a convert to Felix and know a couple of lovely little Felixes. Doesn't work with my last name at all, sadly.

Aubin makes me think of St Alban's. I know it's a saint's name but I think it would be a struggle.

VinegarDrinker · 25/07/2013 12:41

There is a girl called Aubrey at DS's nursery.

squoosh · 25/07/2013 12:38

Nope.

Aubrey is a boys name.

Audrey is a girls name.

VinegarDrinker · 25/07/2013 12:37

Aubrey is a girl's name too. Not that it matters particularly.

LapsedPacifist · 25/07/2013 12:33

Aubin is confusing me somewhat, I've never seen it as a first name. I have a French girlfriend whose surname is Aubin (pronounced 'Aw-ban').

How about Aubrey? Much softer sounding and a classic under-used boy's name. Or Auberon, NN Bron?

ELR · 25/07/2013 12:27

Gabriel is nice too, the only reason I say I don't like aubin is because there was a boy at school called Aubrey who used to pick on me! But I suppose aubin is ok but I really just think of a pet or pet food when I think of felix.

Artijoke · 25/07/2013 12:22

ELR · 25/07/2013 12:21
But Lawrence is nice.
TigerSwallowTail · 25/07/2013 12:21

I like Felix, I love Stephen, I don't like Aubin and I hate Lawrence.

So Felix Stephen Smile.

FreckledLeopard · 25/07/2013 12:18

How about Auberon (as in Waugh) rather than Aubin (which I do like, incidentally)?

stopprocrastinating · 25/07/2013 12:17

What about the name Fletcher, as alternative to Felix.

stopprocrastinating · 25/07/2013 12:16

I love the name Laurence, with Larry as nn.

FeegleFion · 25/07/2013 12:05

pumpkin Xander was the first name we both liked for DS. Cracking name Wink

SlouchingPanda · 25/07/2013 12:03

PS. To the PP who mentioned 2x 2 syllable A names and comic-book superhero names; I too have that combo, and although I've never had to rescue a woman from a burning building, I often feel like a superhero!

Aubin Lawrence - gorgeous!

Littlecherublegs · 25/07/2013 12:03

Go for Gabriel!

squoosh · 25/07/2013 12:03

Oh I love Gabriel so much.

VinegarDrinker · 25/07/2013 12:02

I like Gabriel a lot.

squoosh · 25/07/2013 12:02

No name is universally liked, if you love a name go for it.

The only time I told someone on MN not to use a name no matter how much she loved it was when she wanted to call her daughter Randy.

SlouchingPanda · 25/07/2013 12:00

Thanks for your kind words PumpkinSweetie. Funnily enough we rejected Aubrey for being too 'bully-worthy'...

Other short-listed options were Bartholomew and Gabriel. We had SO many girls' names!

FWIW Felix is my choice and Aubin DH's.
