We don't know the gender of dc3. We have two names; Charlotte and Edward.

The more time goes on, the more I get a little bored by these names.

We have a tricky surname, rhymes with Pea, is also letters and starts with an 'L'. This means names like Rosa are out because when said with surname it would sound like rosalie.

I'm not really keen on modern names but like traditional, classic but not boring or overused.

Any ideas???

Yeah I think we decided to just not to try and overthink it! BTW I think Carys sounds lovely, Erin is one we like too and I do think it goes OK with surname but there are others that sound better.

Good luck in finding a name you love.

xigris · 25/07/2013 19:45

Not helpful but I love your surname! I think it goes with loads.

I like:

Amy
Alice
Jemima

Reuben
Samuel
Joseph

Good luck! Grin

Hi imaginaryhat, our surname definitely makes naming a lot harder doesn't it?

I think Zack is fine. I think it becomes a problem when the two names together make another name eg Rosa makes Roaslie. Then people become confused. But with Zack, they will be expecting to a hear a name (in the doctors for example) not a word so they would hear 'Zack' and not 'zackly. IMHO anyway!

I think we share a surname OP, I started a v similar thread a couple of weeks ago for advise as everything seems to run into it!

Our faves are are Isaac, Sebastian, Zachary, Rory and Benjamin for boys (dh also likes Reuben but I don't) For a girl we like Harriet (Hattie), Georgia, Martha and Felicity.

Its a real struggle to match a name, I think we are gonna take onyabike's advice above e.g. it was pointed out that Zach would sound like 'exactly', but I think we decided its not a good enough reason to rule it out as you don't often give a nickname and surname together!

FromageFrog · 25/07/2013 12:56

I can't use Ethan because of recent family developments, although it was on our boys list for both dd1 and dd2. Same with Marcus (which I love!)

I like Sebastian - but not Seb.

What about Alicia with our surname?

I'm glad Carys passes the surname test!

I actually think both Carys and Erin sound fine with your surname.

How about Ethan or Sebastian for a boys name?

MagicBaguette · 25/07/2013 12:07

Carys I think would be ok, not sure about Erin with the surname though!

Though I do love the name Erin.

MagicBaguette · 25/07/2013 12:06

Imogen?

Littlecherublegs · 25/07/2013 12:01

Do you think Erin sounds daft with our surname?

OP posts:
FromageFrog · 25/07/2013 10:42

The surname thing is a real PITA. Rules out so many lovely names.

I didn't consider it with dd1 and frequently people think her first and surname are all one name - even though that would make a completely made up name Confused

OP, I sympathise with you re your concerns about how the name sounds with your last name. The surname I inherited from my DH is difficult to work with too. FWIW, I decided to choose first names for my DC that I "loved" and that maybe didn't sound quite as "good" with the surname as others I liked less. To date, my DC have never mentioned any concerns with their name combos despite me worrying about it at the time, (and they are certainly of an age where they would let me know!). In the end I figured that on the whole, you generally go by your first name, and that most people don't give your surname a second thought unless the combo sounds really bad or makes a word which has a "double entendre"! I must add that I think that Carys sound completely fine with your surname and if you love it, you should go with it!

Do you think Carys + surname goes well? I do love Carys but had discounted it due to surname issue.

Jude is one my favourite boys names but it becomes Julie when said with surname.

Alex is one boys shortening I do like but cannot use

I love Florence but dh doesn't. I might convince him yet but its very doubtful.

I also like Sophie (and its variants) but cannot use because of relations. Same reasons for Rebecca.

With boys names, I don't like names which can shortened to really popular nicknames; so daniel becomes another Dan. We all know a Steve and Matt for example.
