Not keen on Catherine.
Any suggestions?

I know quite a few little Kitty's around here, most are christened Kitty, but also one Catherine, one Kathleen and a Christina.

mewkins · 24/07/2013 20:26

Kristen or Kirsteen?

Cocodale · 24/07/2013 20:11

We have a Katia and really loved Katerina, she gets called Kitty.

MrsPercyPig · 24/07/2013 20:01

Kitty is a nn for Kathleen in Ireland.

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 24/07/2013 19:33

Christabel/Christobel/Christabella/Christobella. Love these names, they should be more popular.

superlambanana · 23/07/2013 23:51

Caroline?

mayoandchips · 21/07/2013 19:16

Kitana
(Mortal Kombat fan over here!)

It also alludes to the Katana- Japanese sword.

Mhysa · 19/07/2013 22:56

Tigerlily lucky you, it's a beautiful name, both ways it's pronounced.
Horry I have a Tabitha already. She delights In having a cats name Grin

NN business. It's quite the family tradition to have a NN, ALL my maternal grandmothers are registered Elizabeth, but all known by there NN. I named DD2 Elizabeth, but she will always be known by her NN. She is only called by her full name when naughty Wink

The reason I decided to follow this tradition? Her NN is very cutesy and it gives her options depending her chosen career.

...ivykaty44, it must be a cultural thing depending upon where you live and the norms: as I said, in my own circles, there is a big difference between a nickname (pretty much an insult) and the derivative, shortened or different form of a full name. I agree, Nelly is a derivative of Helen, Billy is a derivative of William but they are not nicknames!

zeeboo · 19/07/2013 22:28

Kitty is a diminutive of Katherine, anything else is just made up and I agree with a pp. Why call a child something and then give it another names shortened form?

ivykaty44 · 19/07/2013 22:25

emacp - so what about Nelly or Billy or Polly they are nicknames for Helen Mary Ann and William but they are not shortened versions of the name

HorryIsUpduffed · 19/07/2013 22:25

Nicknames are affectionate.

My DC have nicknames entirely unrelated to their real names, that evolved organically if you like. One is called an animal he is like; the other after a noise he made a lot as a newborn.

HorryIsUpduffed · 19/07/2013 22:22

If DC3 hadn't waggled obvious boy bits at the scan I would be having a Kitty.

Full name contenders were, in descending order of likelihood:

Catherine
Christabel
Tabitha

I may one day have a cat called Victoria Tabitha nn Queen Kitty Grin

emacp · 19/07/2013 21:41

...this nickname thing, where I come from a nickname is derogatory or mocking, perhaps playing on a weakness or failing or negative trait of a family or family member, therefore I do not understand why parents want to give children nicknames.
To shorten a name, give it a derivative, e.g. Kitty,Kate or Katie for Katherine or Catherine; Bob, Bobby Rob, Robbie for Robert; Will, Willy, Liam for William; I can understand all of these. Why would any parent want to give their child a nickname? I would really appreciate an explanation of this. Thank you

Mhysa I am not in the least bit exotic, or Russian for that matter! My mother has French and Swedish ancestry and my paternal grandparents originate from the West Indies but neither have much correlation with my name.

Yet I find my name suits me perfectly! I say go for it! because I'm clearly not biased or anything Grin

Mhysa · 19/07/2013 20:50

I love Katya, but think we're not exotic enough to carry it off IYKWIM (also love the name Lillijana, but wouldn't use it for same reason)
Love Clementine but not sure how Kitty would work as a NN though.

Kathleen

3ofeach · 18/07/2013 22:42

My DD3 is Keturah shortened to Kitty

PrincessScrumpy · 18/07/2013 22:41

I have a Kitty, but that's on her birth cert. it's a name in its own right from the 16th century. We love it and did consider using a name on her birth cert that could be shortened but we decided we just liked Kitty so went with that.

Callmedreckly · 18/07/2013 22:37

I had a great aunt Kitty, her real name was Frances?

Earnshaw · 18/07/2013 22:35

Christina.

Spidder · 18/07/2013 22:33

my mum had an aunty kitty, but her real name was Sarah. Hmm

MummyPig24 · 18/07/2013 22:24

My friends daughter is Kitty, real name Kaitlyn, which she hates so decided she wanted to be called Kitty.

Another friend is Kitty, real name Katherine.

A girl at school was known as Kitty, real name Kirsten.

AnathemaDevice · 18/07/2013 21:25

I've got a 2 year old Kitty who is Kathleen on her birth certificate.

tigerlilyboo21 · 18/07/2013 16:16

Aww thanks bootsy! I think there are a couple of pronunciations for it, mine is pronounced Ka-tee-ya but I've also heard it pronounced Kat-cha.

I think it's actually a diminutive of Yekaterina, which is Russian for Katherine.
