I could be being hormonal as just found out today I'm having a boy when desperately wanted a girl.

However....the more I think about it, the more I really really want to call our new son after my Dad who was the love of my life and sadly died 3 years ago. His name was Russell nn Russ.

I know this isn't a popular or immediately cool name...but could it be trendy again (especially as Russ) on the right little boy?

Would value your opinions as I'll have to fight for this one with DH if I fix on it. At the moment it's the only name my heart is shouting "yes!" to

I do see what you mean DonDraper. I gave my son a name that peaked (in the USA anyway) about five years before I was born! We haven't come across another. It's still dropping in popularity. Officially. But, I have seen it mentioned once or twice on mumsnet so I think it is going to start rising again soon.

I like it. I wouldn't choose it because of other reasons but think it could be a cool, unusual but classic name.

Thank you all so much for some great feedback. DH is dead set against it but it would mean a lot to me so I'm going to fight for it and try to persuade him it's not a ridiculous name....

Yes, see, this whole 'needs another generation to be cool' is exactly what I'm talking about.

How much cooler is it in reality to have a 'cool' name when you're a baby/toddler and one of the crowd, sharing the name with a whole load of other babies/toddlers...

...or to have a 'cool' name - and be the only one with it - when you're in your 20s or 30s...?

Without a doubt, go for it, you'll regret it if you don't.

DS has an uncool birth-certificate name, although his nickname (just an abbreviation of the name) is way more zeitgeist-y. Kind of like Russell vs Russ.

The bottom line is that by the time our DSs are in their 20s and 30s, i.e. in their prime, everyone will be so bored of all the Alfies, Archies, Harrys and Charlies, that their names will absolutely have the edge, and sound refreshing and different.

My DH is also Russell nn Russ and v cool!! Listen to your heart and do it....sounds like you'll regret it if you don't.

Not many about! I've only known 2 I can recall. Really don't like the first one (ex, let me down in a big way) but the other is fine so don't think I can label them all as bad based on my bad experiences!

Funny, we were having a joke telling session in the car tonight and I came up with that one. And then realised dd didn't know any child called Russell! There was the occasional one my ageish (early 40s), but it's one of those names I think maybe another generation needed to be cool.

Always liked it as a name tho'.

I only know one Russell and he is a dependable, caring, intelligent, sociable type. How could I dislike the name given that? It's unusual but not invented. I think it's a great choice.
