How do you manage to jointly choose a name when your OH has such crap taste in names??!

**Disclaimer - I apologise if you have a child with one of these names!! I'm not trying to be nasty!

I thought he was joking at first with some of them, but it's becoming apparent he just has a ... "strange" taste in names - it's like he thinks the baby will be popping out middle-aged...!

Rita?
Lorraine?
Malcolm?
Reginald?
Geoffrey?
Ruebens?

He has come up with a couple I do like, but he doesn't move in the same circles as I do with lots of friends with little children, and doesn't believe me that there will be at least 5 of each Alfie, Lily, Evie etc in our child's class and I don't want that.

How did you work it out with your partner?

DH couldn't think of any names for our baby so I came up with a list of what I liked, he's aid no to most of them, and we ended up with just a couple that we both liked to choose from. Maybe you could try that - give him a short list so that the really weird ones he likes just aren't an option?

Helovesmehelovesmenot · 04/07/2013 22:02

I do like Reggie, it is nice!

LilyAmaryllis · 04/07/2013 22:00

FF I don't think I did keep a straight face, and I did look at DH in a whole new light after the revelation of these favourite names. Kind of, how did I marry you and get pregnant and still not know this about you!?!

He thought of those boys names straight after a conversation we had where we agreed, because our surname is quite feminine, that DS would need a strongly masculine name to counteract the effect of the surname. "So, Caractacus is your idea of a strongly masculine name??"

Conversely he looked at my list of entirely normal boys names and said he didn't like any of them at all (apart from the one name we had in common). We'd be absolutely stuck if we ever had another child, not that we're planning to.

I do like Thomas and Nathan of your new list (and Matthew is fine).

Not sure about Morgan for a girl.

ZolaBuddleia · 04/07/2013 17:03

I love Pearl!!

Foof, I agree, LTB, they are all hilariously awful.

I don't like any of your second list either.

WandaDoff · 04/07/2013 15:51

My DP had Jacqueline & Sandra on his list. Hmm
Fortunately I gave birth to a baby & not a middle aged woman, so we went for something else.

FoofFighter · 04/07/2013 15:42

ooh gosh Lily, how did you keep a straight face?? Grin

Yes I found my DH's suddenly revealed taste in names very surprising. With both DD and DS.

With both there was only really one name in the whole dictionary that was on both of our lists. And the rest vetoed (in both directions).

To give a sample of DH's name choices:

boy: Caractacus
Bartholomew
Mungo

DS has had a lucky escape

girl: Pearl (I don't think this is so outrageous but its still definitely not my taste. And he really really wanted it. Apologies to all MNers with Pearls!)

NooMyx · 04/07/2013 14:49

I'm kind of planning to just exclaim "Oh! Hello [a name I like]!" when we're handed a brand new baby, and hope that DH will be too overwhelmed and tired to object... Grin

maybe half joking, maybe not...!

winterlights · 04/07/2013 14:19

I love Morgan (for both genders) but DH has vetoed it...

FoofFighter · 04/07/2013 14:10

Cinnabar, I am sure he would love your suggestions!!

I sat down with the top 100 last night and we did manage to hit on a few we both liked (well for him really liked, for me, non offensive like well enough but don't love iyswim?)

B:
Thomas
Morgan
Ethan
Nathan
Matthew

G:
Morgan....

Going to look at the top 500 link tonight with him

Yes, very sorry.

How about Derek, Maurice or Christopher - all courtesy of my side of the family....

Tis possible that there's only me, you and Beyonce left now (and that's not a phrase I ever thought I'd need to type).

I cried when The Pixies split...

CinnabarRed · 03/07/2013 21:43

Just call a girl Pixie, and the TSC and her DH could both be happy without resorting to Kim.

invicta · 03/07/2013 21:36

Love Reuben and Reginald.

we could never agree at all, so in the end we just went with the name of precious family members that we wished to honour.

And it worked. :)

DH was very keen on a name for DC1 that would have rhymed dreadfully. Think 'Jason Mason' that sort of thing.

he still cannot see anything wrong with it.

Thank heavens we both had lovely GPs and Aunts/Uncles we could pillage from!

YokoUhOh · 03/07/2013 20:25

Overuse of the words 'throw up' in that post, apologies to anyone in the early stages of pregnancy :)

MikeLitoris · 03/07/2013 20:23

Even though dp had agreed to my name before dd was born I still made a huge point of loudly announcing her name several times, just incase Grin

BeyonceCastle · 03/07/2013 20:23

Kim Deal is an excellent reason Wink
but i am biased as my dds middle name is Frances after Black Francis...

YokoUhOh · 03/07/2013 20:23

www.namedtogether.co.uk

It'll throw up the Top 500 names no Lorraine, then and both you and DH choose your favourites separately. It then cross-references your lists and throws up the ones you both like :)

BeyonceCastle · 03/07/2013 20:21

Reuben is okay - you yourself could shorten it to ben
Verity is vair nice/unique - he could shorten it to Rita

SugarMiceInTheRain · 03/07/2013 20:20

I never could have a sensible conversation about it. I showed DH my list, he vetoed most of them, and when DS1 was born I said 'It's x or y' and he picked one. With DS2 I did something similar but in the end we both had a favourite combination.
