I have a Tabitha, middle name Marion, after mil.NOt foud out sex yet but if its a girl we definitly love Posy, very small possibility of using Josephine officially just in case and also because its dils mothers name.

All my children have family names as middle names and theres only really NIcola,Karen,Eleanor and Ethel left.I dont like the first two so i am thinking ethel?

I know its very old lady like but i do love granny chic? Also love Percy for a boy but dh doesnt like it and whenever ive mentioned it ive had looks of pure horror,so lets hope its a girl!

:o

Sorry.

sandberry · 03/07/2013 16:53

Posy is dead on trend. I predict it will be the next Poppy/Daisy in five years. There are a growing number either just Posy or short for Josephine or Primrose. People are bored of Poppy/Daisy/Rosie/Lily so are looking for the next thing and Posy is it and even better it has a bit of old lady chic about it.

I'd go for Eleanor as a middle name if you want her to have a choice between old lady chic and more conventional. Although Ethel is on the up too, it just doesn't have quite a nice enough sound to be really popular.

PMSL Amber good on you for not getting too caught up in all the negativity Smile

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 03/07/2013 16:01

Onesleeptillwembley · 03/07/2013 15:52

Deluded? HUMPH. (My dh would agree though, he firmly vetoed Loveday.)

EuphemiaLennox · 03/07/2013 15:06

There are some really over the top unpleasant comments on this thread.

Posy is a perfectly reasonable name along the lines of Poppy, Daisy, Rosie etc.

It might not be to your taste but it's hardly the catastrophe some of you are making out.

Also the OP asked for opinions on the middle name. So:

I think what middle names are really doesn't matter as they're never used, but they are a nice opportunity to make an old or loved friend or relative feel acknowledged and cherished. So OP I'd just go with whichever middle name will spread to most happiness, whether it's a crap name or not.

Both my children have middle names which I actually don't like as names but which gave each set of grandparents a little proud moment when announced.

The only time middle names are used is when that conversation 'what's your middle name?' comes up. And then it's much better to have a name with significance to explain rather than 'my mum liked it/it was fashionable in 2013.'

Onesleeptillwembley · 03/07/2013 14:37

See even someone who likes Loveday however deludedis saying Posy isn't good. Grin

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 03/07/2013 13:37

Loveday is a gorgeous name. Posy, on the other hand...please don't do it Op.

Primrose and Josephine are both nice. Ethel is old fashioned in a bad way imo, but it's middle name so it doesn't really matter.

SoftSheen · 03/07/2013 13:32

Primrose Eleanor is lovely.

Rhubarbgarden · 03/07/2013 13:27

I love Primrose.

apatchylass · 03/07/2013 12:56

I'm not keen on Posy as a real name, though as a nickname for Josephine, it's fine.

What's wrong with Ethel, everyone? It's sweet.

But Eleanor tops the lot. It is an all time classic, beautiful name as are all its diminutives. You can't go wrong with Eleanor/Elle/Ella. So elegant.

FetaCheeny · 03/07/2013 12:51

Really don't get this over the top reaction to the name Posy! I know a lovely little girl called Posy and never gave it a second thought. No different to Daisy, Poppy, Lily etc, just a bit more unusual.
Makes me laugh which names gets people riled up on here, when some of the favoured names (Maude for example) are considered perfectly acceptable. Imagine being a little girl called Maude amongst a sea of Evie, Poppy, Bella's etc!

Primrose is a good option too. Whichever name you choose the child may dislike it, be it grannyish, boring, dull, unisex, masculine, twee.

I say go for Posy!

kelda · 03/07/2013 12:41

TBH, if she's 13 and hates the name Posy, she'll hate the name Primrose as well.

AmberSocks · 03/07/2013 12:37

Hmmm.

I do like Primrose. Then i could call her Posy and if she hates it when shes 13 then she can go by Primrose instead.Primros Eleanor sounds nice and like it would suit most ages.WIll discuss with dh,although obviously last say is down to me.

KrazyKurls · 03/07/2013 12:36

Possibly the most ridiculous name I've ever seen on MN.

I do hope your DD doesn't decide to move in a different 'circle' to you with the Kaidens and the Mohammads.

notso · 03/07/2013 09:54

I like it. It's a shame you have decided against Ethel but understand why if DH's nan didn't like it.
For what it's worth I have a name often described as classic and timeless which I detested as a teenager because I thought it was boring.
I'm glad you aren't listening to the trying too hard and other negative comments. This topic is so fickle IMO.

AnnieLobeseder · 03/07/2013 09:47

I would hate my mother if she had called me Posy. I really would. Luckily, this is why Deed Poll exists.

You asked for opinions. It's a bit daft getting shirty because people haven't said what you wanted to hear!

AmberSocks · 02/07/2013 23:51

and lmao at poor child and unusual name!ffs.

OP posts:
AmberSocks · 02/07/2013 23:50

Well i love it,and so does dh,and i dont agree its cruel, and im also not one of these peopl who have to use a full name all the time,if anything i prefer shortened names!

Again thanks for your opinion (which is your opinion and not fact),but i was actually asking about the middle name...

OP posts:
AnnieLobeseder · 02/07/2013 23:33

Like ladymontdore I don't usually post on these threads but: Posy? Really? That's not a name, it's what flowers come in. Why are you determined to do that to your child? For god's sake, if you must, make it a nickname contraction of something else rather than her actual real name. I assume you actually want her to be taken seriously in her chosen profession when she grows up?

I speak as someone whose mother saw fit to give her a porn-star contraction to an otherwise serviceable name. Thankfully, my birth certificate has the long version and I call myself by a different contraction now, or I'd never have been taken seriously as an adult.

I don't think parents have the right to give their children unusual names with no real option for them to use something else if they hate it. The poor child is the one who has to live with it.
