Alba or Murron

fanjodisfunction · 28/06/2013 18:43

I like Alba, DH likes Murron. We are of scottish blood living in England, which is why I think Alba better as Murron only sounds nice in a scots accent.

Or any other Scottish girls names you would like to add please feel free.

One thing I did with DD, whose name is Sophie, is to collect lots of Sophie stuff. All the Sophie books (Sophie's Choice, Sophie's World etc). Lorna Doone is a great book. I don't know where you might go with Alba or Moron.

Time Travelers Wife.

I love the name Alba for other reasons, but also love this book.

Wuldric · 30/06/2013 01:08

Go for Lorna, which is lovely.

Cannot stand the other two alternatives. Both ugly names IMO. Go with your heart (and your heart is with Lorna)

Maybe it was the AIS part that they were mispronouncing? Ace-ling?

I agree the '-ling' ending is the one you will find in Ireland.

AllegraLilac · 29/06/2013 23:39

Alba is better. Murran in my English accent sounds dire.

RaRaZ · 29/06/2013 21:05

Murron...gonna end up nicknamed Moron. Especially if s/he (dunno what gender these are for, sorry) ever does anything wrong or doesn't understand anything.

forgetmenots · 29/06/2013 20:43

Alba is pronounced Alapa in Gaelic, just FYI.
I like Mirren, and Marsaili (Pronounced Marshally) - Gaelic name :)

EstelleGetty · 29/06/2013 20:18

Squoosh and Gobbolin, my Dsis's girlfriend is an Aisling and it's pronounced Ash-ling. I've never heard it any other way! And it's a gorgeous name.

ZipItShrimpy · 29/06/2013 20:04

Yeah Fanjo!

I've always had a really positive response to my name. Easy to spell, easy to say but yet still not really common.

bemybebe · 29/06/2013 19:59

Alisvolatpropiis sorry did not see your question... count of Alba (or Alva) is one of the most hated historical figures in the Netherlands. Some say April Fool's day origin lies in Dutch struggle against the Spanish in the 16th Century.\

but tbh, just call the baby what you think is right - she will make the name her own!

fanjodisfunction · 29/06/2013 19:53

I'm liking Lorna more now I think, DH has said today how much he hates Alba and Murron just doesn't sound right down here. I think I'm going to have to keep searching for that name, but Lorna is on the list (well on my list anyway)

Love Alba and considered if for dd. She has one of the names on here beginning with L.

squoosh · 29/06/2013 19:15

Gobbolinothewitchscat Aisling is a legitimate Irish name which I have never heard once heard pronounced as Ashleen in Ireland.

No need for them to have been made to feel embarrassed Hmm

FeijoaVodkaStat · 29/06/2013 19:11

Totally biased, but Alba.

Also Murron makes me think of mutton.

mathanxiety · 29/06/2013 19:04

Murron looks like a really inelegant and clunky spelling to me.

Merryn or Merrin are nicer looking imo but I can't put my finger on why this is.

The Irish name Muireann (pr Mwir-en) spelled with one R and two Ns is one I love. It's allegedly a form of Marian.

Would you consider Esme (pr Esmay in my mind)

Lorna is beautiful, a classic, probably impossible to mispronounce.

happyreindeer · 29/06/2013 18:50

I never use the word moron either and encourage other people not to.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 29/06/2013 18:46

I'm Scottish and I've never hear if Murron only Muirrean (which I do like).

To be honest, Murron would sound to me like had heard Muirrean (although I know it spelled "muireann") and were trying to do a rough approximation but didnt know how it was spelled. Sorry. I know a poor unfortunate called "aisling". That should be pronounced "Ashleen" but her American parents didnt realise and pronounced it as it was spelled. It caused a few [hmms] when she joined our Scottish school and she actually changed the pronounciation. Her patents were very Blush.

Don't like Alba either due to the electronic connection mentioned up thread.

RoooneyMara · 29/06/2013 18:39

'school kids are merciless and cruel.'

I feel sad when people cite that as a reason not to use a name, too

RoooneyMara · 29/06/2013 18:38

See I never use that word as it's so disgusting - so I never associated it with Murron.

How sad that the world has come to this.

MrsEricBana · 29/06/2013 18:34

Murron too close to moron for comfort I reckon.

MrsEricBana · 29/06/2013 18:33

Ah, just looked it up, it does mean white and is the f form of Albus.

MrsEricBana · 29/06/2013 18:31

Ooh I like Alba - the daughter in The Time Traveller's Wife was called that and I thought it was lovely. I presumed it meant white and therefore pure etc but maybe not.

squoosh · 29/06/2013 18:22

I really don't like either.

Alba reminds me of cheap electrical goods.

Murren just looks so clumpy.

EstelleGetty · 29/06/2013 12:51

I love Alba. I know a lovely Spanish woman named Alba and I think it sounds so graceful. Plus I'm Scottish, but don't feel remotely sentimental about it, and still think it's gorgeous.

raisah · 29/06/2013 12:33

Alba because Murron is too close to moron and school kids are merciless and cruel.
